šŸ—£Most people talk about pacifier use as it relates to dentition, but what’s less commonly discussed, but absolutely essential to know, is its impact on breathing.

Here’s the thing: In order to ensure optimal NASAL breathing, your tongue should be, at rest (except when talking or eating), suctioned to the roof of your mouth. This seals off the oral cavity.

When you utilize a pacifier, yes, even a cylindrical one like the soothie, it pushes the tongue down, away from the palate and slowly starts breaking the habit of the tongue resting there. For babies with oral restrictions, perhaps post-frenectomy, we need the tongue to learn a new habit - to elevate- and pacifiers inhibit this from occurring. Gradually, over time, this can yield a new habit of mouth breathing.

Mouth breathing has a host of detrimental health issues, so any time that we jeopardize the ā€œhabitā€ of nasal breathing, we are putting ourselves at risk. We often wonder why enlarged tonsils or adenoids happen, habitual mouth breathing (with a root cause such as this) is one of those reasons.

There are some benefits to pacifier use, as is absolutely essential to help your baby regulate their emotional state. But, if you are choosing to use a pacifier, follow ā€œsoothe and removeā€ or ā€œregulate and removeā€ guidelines and limit the amount of time the pacifier is in your mouth. If your baby needs to be regulated (you may also use nursing if breastfeeding, baby wearing, music, etc. to do so when possible first), utilize a pacifier; but when they are calm, please remove it.

Pacifier use is about so much more than crooked teeth. Set your baby on a path for optimal breathing and development.

It’s been a while! Covid altered all of our plans and goals for 2020 and a few days after my last post I found out I was pregnant! In Nov, I gave birth to this little peanut! šŸ’™ Becoming a mom has definitely given me new insight into the world of speech, language and oral motor development. While we took a much needed social media hiatus, BB Speech kept on running and we proudly made a transition into the world of teletherapy, expanded our reach and kept on learning and growing. 2020 was tough on us all; cheers to health and good fortune only for the new year!

A group of Filipino speech pathologists launched on Sunday a 'communication board' to aid healthcare workers in communicating with COVID-19-stricken patients unable to speak due to intubation or other escalated respiratory support.

šŸ—£ While we are all home on different levels of quarantine 😷, it doesn’t mean that learning has to stop! A number of online-based educational curriculums and resources that typically are purchased by school districts have been made available for FREE during this crisis. I do not know who made this document, but someone took the time to compile a list of ALL of the free subscriptions available. Please visit the website above (and in my bio). I know the list is overwhelming! If you’d like to know which one is applicable for your little learners, please don’t hesitate to reach out and ask! Also, if you or someone you know is in need of WiFi during this time, please visit my CV HELP stories to find a number to call! Many internet companies are helping our learners get set up!

Letter/ sound match with toys! So easy. Write the letters of the alphabet and have your child find toys that start with each letter. For younger kids who are learning letters you can use magnetic letter to match letter to letter.
