Theraplay NYC Theraplay NYC We provide occupational, physical, speech therapy, and counseling services.

Theraplay, located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan prides itself on providing individualized one-to-one treatment in a fun and challenging environment where children are empowered to reach their full potential. Emphasis is placed on working closely with parents to ensure that the benefits of therapy continue outside of the gym. Speech-Language Therapy
Developing communication skills is one of the most important elements to socializing and creating valuable relationships. For the child faced with speech impairments, it is necessary to provide strategies and resources that will assist with daily communication with the child's parents, siblings, teachers and friends. Our speech-language pathologists' goal is to help children to become successful communicators and independent language learners by tailoring our programs specific to each child's needs. Occupational Therapy
Many people are surprised to hear that children participate in occupational therapy, because we usually associate the term "occupation" with jobs adults perform. However, there is a broader view of "occupations" that include children's activities such as playing, learning and socializing with friends. At Theraplay, we help children develop these necessary skills so their transition into adulthood becomes a path to an independent and rewarding life. Our pediatric occupational therapists provide evaluation, intervention and consultation in the following areas:

Fine Motor/Handwriting Skills

Play & Socialization

Sensory Integration

Organizing and Planning their Motor Skills

Oral Motor Functioning

Self-Help & Hygiene

Adaptive Equipment Modifications

Environmental Adaptations for Home and School Settings

Theraplay's treatment rooms and innovative equipment is designed to mirror playful activities to the child, yet the therapist are actually drawing upon extensive training to provide challenging therapeutic activities aimed at developing greater capabilities and skill levels. Physical Therapy
As physical therapists specializing in pediatrics, we assist children in developing and enhancing mobility so they may safely participate in activities at home, in the community, classroom and on the playground. At Theraplay, our physical therapists are concerned with children's ability to take part in important movement activities such as crawling and walking, running, playing games, participating in sports, and in other important physical interactions. In addition, for children who rely on mobility aids such as wheelchairs, orthotics and other supports, our therapists show them how to navigate safely in various environments. Our therapists provide evaluation, intervention and consultation in the following areas:

Gross motor development

Muscle tone and strength

Posture/postural control

Pre-gait and gait training

Locomotion patterns

Neuromuscular function

Endurance

Body alignment

Environmental adaptations

Wheelchair positioning and mobility

Splinting/bracing/orthotics

Theraplay's physical therapists often incorporate many intervention approaches including stretching, massage, mobilization, strengthening and endurance training to enhance the child's capabilities and prevent deformities and contractures. Our children also benefit from the highly specialized adaptive equipment that is used to increase their physical performance and function.

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Warmer weather is coming and spring is just around the corner! 🌸 Have your kiddo hop on their trike/bike to practice

🚲 Overall strength
🚲 Motor coordination
🚲 Bilateral integration
🚲 Motor planning
🚲 Body awareness

Riding a trike/bike is a great way to work on so many skills as well as providing your kiddo with great propriocetive and vestibular input.

Does your child have difficulty coordinating pushing the pedals? Place different stickers on your kiddos shoes (ex: blue sticker on one foot and red on the other). Tell them to push down with red, then blue, then red, etc.

Does your child have difficulty learning to ride a bike without training wheels? Take the wheels off and make your own balance bike! Have you kiddo practice sitting on the bike and pushing off with his/her feet. This will help them get comfortable sitting and balancing on the bike while it is moving.

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Dot markers are a simple toy to have at home and on the go that target so many great skills

🖍Grasping skills
🖍 Early in-hand manipulation skills of screwing and unscrewing caps
🖍 Bilateral integration
🖍 Pre-writing skills
🖍 Visual motor skills
🖍 Proprioceptive input
🖍 Practice labeling colors
🖍 Practice target words like “dot”, “woah”, “bang, bang, bang”

Dot markers are a great way to introduce your kiddos to drawing and begin working on those grasping skills.

Pro tip: place the paper on a vertical surface to work on upper body strengthening, endurance, bilateral integration and visual motor skills.

Level 🆙 those fine motor skills and tape the dot markers onto the table with painters tape. Your kiddo will need to pinch and peel the tape off to get the marker!

Wanna add gross motor skills and increase your child’s attention?! Place the markers on one side of the room and the paper on another. Every time your child goes through the obstacle course they need to get a new marker to color in the paper.

Want to work on color recognition and visual perceptual skills? Draw circles of different colors on a piece of paper. Have your child match the dot marker to the colored circles and place a dot in each color that matches! This is a great way to work on visual scanning skills as well! 👀

AND don’t forget to follow for the best FREE dot marker printable worksheets ever! They have worksheets for every season and holiday imaginable!

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Books, books and more books! In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday today, we could not recommend books enough! Books are amazing for kids of ALL AGES and works on so many skills:

📚 Grasping skills to turn the page
📚 Bilateral integration
📚 Finger isolation when pointing at pictures
📚 Visual scanning skills
📚 Expressive and receptive language
📚 Teaches categories and labeling items
📚 Imagination and creativity

Work on strengthening the belly and eye muscles by having your kiddo read while lying on his/her belly.

Does your kiddo need some heavy work? Have your kiddo lift and carry books from one part of the room to a cozy corner or bed to read. Have them carry it back! 💪🏻

Does your kiddo need movement breaks? Have your kiddo get one book, then do an animal walk, jump, or run across the room, read the book, and then do another movement back. Make it into an obstacle course! 🏃‍♂️

Reading can be a great activity to work on sharing, turn taking and social skills. Have an older sibling read a book to a younger sibling. Or have kids take turns being the reader.

Reading a great calming activity to add into a bedtime routine to calm your kiddos sensory system and get them ready for bed! 😴

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Baby water play mats are such a great toy to work on so many great skills at an early age! These mats work on

💧 Processing tactile information
💧 Upper body and hand strengthening
💧 Proprioceptive input
💧 Tummy time
💧 Ocular motor skills like tracking
💧 Imitation of body motions

Is your kiddo having difficulty with tummy time? This is a GREAT toy to make tummy time motivating and engaging.

Is your kiddo sensitive to messy play and tactile input? This is a great first step to desensitizing them. They can explore the water without the mess!

Level ⬆️: Have your baby practice rolling on the mat. They can notice how the water feels below them. This will increase the proprioceptive input they get while rolling.

Have an older kid? Place this mat on a vertical surface, for example a wall with painters tape, and play with it that way. Working against gravity will help strengthen their upper body.

Practice tapping on the mat in various rhythms and ways and have your baby imitate you. This is a precursor to communication skills!

Practice those 👁 skills by playing I-spy with older kids and trying to locate different toys in the water.

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Trampolines are a great way to get your kiddo moving and work on so many skills!

✨Proprioceptive input
✨Jumping skills
✨Leg strength and endurance
✨Balance
✨Bilateral integration
✨Practice saying first words like “go”, “jump” “woah”

Does your child have trouble jumping? No problem! Stand on the trampoline and you jump! The input will help begin to facilitate the jumping motion for them and your kiddo will still get sensory input. Also, practice jumping off of the trampoline and other surfaces first.

Is your kiddo tired or fatigued and having difficulty focusing? 😴 Give then a jumping break! Jumping on the trampoline for even 3-5 minutes can significantly increase your child’s arousal level and attention. This is a great idea for a movement break, especially during a long day of zoom school 👨‍💻.

Level up and use your 🧠! Work on listening and auditory processing skills. Choose a letter or number. Have your kiddo jump until they hear that number or letter and then stop. 🛑

Don’t have a trampoline? No problem! Have your kiddo jump on a mattress or couch (with supervision of course). 🛏

🌟Pro tip: balance jumping on the trampoline with heavy work. Have your kiddo lift, pull, push or carry anything (chair, pillows, laundry basket, games, etc.). This will help balance the intensive proprioceptive input to ensure regulation instead of becoming dysregulated and over active.

TUESDAY TOY OF THE DAY!

Honeybee tree is an oldie but a goodie at Theraplay. This game works on so many great skills like

🐝 Bilateral coordination
🐝 Pincer grasp
🐝 Visual motor skills
🐝 Frustration tolerance and emotional regulation
🐝 Teaching cause and effect
🐝 Socialization and turn taking
🐝 Impulsivity and executive functioning skills
🐝 Gradation of force
🐝 Practice saying first words like “woah”, “look”, “bee” “fall down”
🐝 Practice counting skills as you count the leaves while you put them in and count who has more bees at the end

This is such a fun game to play as a whole family or with friends. Take turns pulling the leaves one at a time and see who can get the least number of bees to fall.

Level ⬆️ those fine motor skills and use tongs to pinch and pull the leaves out one at a time!

Work on integrating your child’s Moro primitive reflex with this game! Practice having calm reactions when lots of bees fall and not having a fight or flight response.

Work on emotional regulation skills. 😡😀 When all the bees fall is that a big deal or little deal? Use humor! Silly bees, you fell out of the tree. No big deal.. let’s play again!
