What exactly is subluxation degeneration?
Subluxation degeneration occurs when a joint is whacked out of its normal alignment and the range of motion is weakened. This can be caused by overexertion, poor posture, accidental injury, and so forth. When the spine is misaligned, the overall structure of the body and the nerve function within the joint is compromised, which can lead to stress, physical pain, loss of height, fatigue, stenosis (in which there is an atypical narrowing of the spinal column), overall nerve damage, scar tissue formation, and even unnatural bone fusion. There are four phases to subluxation degeneration, which get progressively worse over time, especially if one goes without chiropractic care.
Think of a football player -- every time they fall, their body is put through the ringer, but their spine’s ability to absorb the blow protects them from trauma. Now imagine they have Phase 1 subluxation degeneration. Many people do not even know they are experiencing it until it is too late due to a lack of symptoms. When this hypothetical football player is around the age of 40, the spinal disks narrow, posture is shot, and bone spurs develop, which pinch the nerve roots and spinal cord, potentially causing weakness and numbness in the extremities. Once you have reached Phase 3 the damage is not irreversible like Phase 4, but regardless of phase it is essential to come in and get treated.
Through painless manual adjustments, chiropractors work to realign the spine and restore range of motion. Even if you do not feel any pain, make sure to get an X-Ray at our office to check and make sure you are not suffering from subluxation degeneration. It is a fairly common condition, especially in a technology-driven world, so better to be safe than sorry, don’t you think? 🤔
