13+ years ago, I stepped out of Glenwood County Jail with blood on my white t-shirt, a few ci******es with no lighter, and only one shoe on my two feet...

This had been a pattern for some time: get sick and sober up in jail, swear I was done and ready to quit, get out, relapse, then go on benders until I was forcefully separated from the booze and substances again (usually in the form of handcuffs and a jail cell).

13 years ago, I was blessed with the gift of desperation. I was mentally, physically, and spiritually bankrupt—a feeling most of us addicts/alcoholics know all too well. There's no worse feeling... but this feeling led to the greatest blessing I've ever been gifted: willingness.

Willingness to do whatever it took to never go back. Willingness to listen to others, take suggestions, and quit living by my own will. A willingness to change.

13 years sober now, my life isn't perfect, but it's perfect to me. My struggles are truly blessings in disguise.
