Counseling in Schools

Counseling in Schools Where Caring Inspires Success CIS is also there in times of crisis with response services designed to help address immediate and secondary trauma.

Counseling in Schools (“CIS”) works to promote the emotional and social growth of children so that they can thrive in school and succeed in life. Through the work of our more than 100 clinical psychologist and certified social workers, CIS helps children deal with issues such as abuse, homelessness, bullying, violence and other concerns. We support students to ensure that they stay in school and have a positive learning experience, and in turn create a calmer classroom environment that benefits all children in a school. We provide targeted programs to administrators, teachers, guidance counselors and other support service providers in the school community, helping those professionals avoid the burnout that is common when working in challenging schools, and supporting administrators trying to turn around failing schools. In response to increasing demand, CIS has quadrupled in size since its inception. We remain committed to our mission and have demonstrated our ability to meet the growing need without compromising quality. CIS is a non-profit 501(c)3 community-based organization, supporting students at risk in New York City public schools. We work with students in their environment, be it their school, home or shelter, and help to build more resilient communities. The value of CIS initiatives is recognized and supported by the New York City Department of Education, United States Federal Emergency Management Association, and the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York. Wellness Wednesday Reminder: Progress over perfection.

In school communities, every small step matters, a supportive conversation, a moment of validation, a student choosing to open up. Change doesn’t happen all at once, but it happens in consistent, caring actions.

Today, take a moment to acknowledge the quiet wins, for your students and for yourself.

Fun Fact Friday: Did you know that students are more likely to succeed academically when they feel emotionally supported at school?

Research consistently shows that strong relationships with trusted adults improve attendance, engagement, and overall well-being. That’s why school-based mental health support isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.

At CIS, we’re proud to help create safe spaces where students feel seen, heard, and supported every day.

The impact of school-based mental health support goes beyond the counseling room.

Students who have access to mental health services in schools show improved attendance, stronger academic engagement, and healthier peer relationships.

At Counseling in Schools, we believe mental health support should be accessible, consistent, and embedded where students already are — in their school communities.

When we invest in youth mental health, we invest in the future.

Anamarija Vuic, CAT-LP (MA, MPsych) brings Drama Therapy into the school counseling space through structured, creative assessment tools designed to support adolescent voice and emotional safety.
Her workshop explores drama therapy–based interventions for assessment and goal setting, offering both experiential and practical strategies that create a distanced, contained environment where students can share more freely in early counseling stages.

Participants gain a deeper understanding of projective techniques, aesthetic distance, and arts-based assessment approaches that strengthen insight, engagement, and therapeutic connection in middle and high school settings.
