The Worker Health Protection Program has expanded to provide medical screenings for former workers of Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory-New Mexico. To schedule an exam or request more information you can call 1-888-241-1199.

The DOE Former Worker Medical Screening Program is being expanded to New Mexico national lab workers exposed to harmful toxins.

Operation Hardtack II was a series of atmospheric nuclear tests conducted at the Nevada Test Site from September to October 1958.

The operation consisted of 19 weapons tests to evaluate the yield and efficiency of newly developed nuclear devices and 18 safety tests to determine the stability of nuclear devices during transportation and storage.

The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), which offers compensation to downwinders and uranium miners who developed a related illness, is set to expire in June 2024.

Federal funding for compensation and free test screenings for downwinders and former Nevada Test Site workers is set to sunset next year.

Tomorrow, March 8th, at 2pm EST, DOE and the Former Worker Programs are partnering to host a webinar about Beryllium and Beryllium testing. The discussion will be led by Jamie L. Stalker, M.D, and Lee S. Newman, M.D., M.A., FCCP, FACOEM, F. Collegium Ramazzini from the National Supplemental Screening Program. Registration and details are available at the link below.

The National Supplemental Screening Program (NSSP) is a health screening program for former U.S. Department of Energy workers.

Check out BTMed’s recent study, which shows that that while the risk of beryllium sensitivity does not relate to the number of years working on a DOE site, the risk of those with beryllium sensitivity then developing Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) does relate to the number of years working on a DOE site.

Presentations will introduce each program, give an overview of the FWPs, discuss exam findings, and why the programs are important for DOE workers. Topics will include filing claim forms electronically, and navigating the EEOICPA procedure manual.

"This is an area of tremendous concern," Dr. Norman "Ned" E. Sharpless, director of the National Cancer Institute, said in an interview in Cancer Prevention Research. "The pandemic has affected cancer screening in a dramatic way…a massive screening deficit over the last 12 months—millions of screening events have been missed," Sharpless added."

The Worker Health Protection Program has returned to screening at all sites after a pause during COVID. Former Department of Energy works can call 1-888-241-1199 to find out about the screening.

Since March 2020, COVID-19 has caused a disruption in surgeries and treatments for patients with cancer.
