Worker Health Protection Program (WHPP) Providing free medical screening to former Department of Energy (DOE) workers

The Worker Health Protection Program (WHPP) provides free medical screening for former workers at the following Department of Energy (DOE) sites:

Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY)
Fernald Feed Plant (OH)
Idaho National Laboratory (ID)
K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant (TN)
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (CA)
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (CA)
Mound (OH)
Nevada Test Site (NV)
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (TN)
Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (KY)
Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (KY)
Sandia National Laboratory (CA)
Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP)
Y-12 (TN)

The Early Lung Cancer Detection (ELCD) program component of WHPP utilizes low-dose CT scan to detect lung cancers early when treatment may be effective. Low-dose CT scan has been proven to reduce deaths from lung cancer among high-risk groups.

*Former workers are eligible for screening once every three years.

*Screenings occur in DOE communities.

*Findings may be useful in Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Act (EEOICPA) claims

*To date, over 30,000 workers have participated in WHPP. FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENT, CALL

Check out BTMed’s recent study, which shows that that while the risk of beryllium sensitivity does not relate to the number of years working on a DOE site, the risk of those with beryllium sensitivity then developing Chronic Beryllium Disease (CBD) does relate to the number of years working on a DOE site.

A special thanks to the American Journal of Industrial Medicine for publishing the findings and to all BTMed participants who made this study possible!

"This is an area of tremendous concern," Dr. Norman "Ned" E. Sharpless, director of the National Cancer Institute, said in an interview in Cancer Prevention Research. "The pandemic has affected cancer screening in a dramatic way…a massive screening deficit over the last 12 months—millions of screening events have been missed," Sharpless added."

The Worker Health Protection Program has returned to screening at all sites after a pause during COVID. Former Department of Energy works can call 1-888-241-1199 to find out about the screening.

Since March 2020, COVID-19 has caused a disruption in surgeries and treatments for patients with cancer.
