Care For the Homeless mourns the untimely passing of our colleague, Fred Shack.

Fred led Urban Pathways for more than 20 years. He and his team were valued colleagues and partners to CFH, in particular as co-sponsors of the annual Homeless Persons' Memorial. Fred was a tireless leader dedicated to a diverse and effective homeless services sector, a respected teacher, and an exemplary advocate for people experiencing homelessness. He was also the epitome of decency.

The staff and leadership of CFH send our condolences to Fred's family and to our friends and colleagues at Urban Pathways. With Fred's passing, we have lost one of New York City's most effective leaders in the fight against homelessness.

New York City needs more housing that is actually affordable. Despite record levels of “affordable” housing production, most new units are out of reach for those who need them most. Too often, these units require earnings far above what many households can realistically afford.

The solution is clear: we must build 60,000 new homes over the next five years specifically for people who are currently homeless and for extremely low-income households at risk of losing their housing.

Now is the time to act. Urge the New York City Council to prioritize housing for those most in need. Make your voice heard: bit.ly/Add60KHomesNYC

At Susan’s Place, our women's shelter in The Bronx, our recent open mic and workshop centered on one simple but powerful idea: your voice matters.

Through storytelling, poetry, and shared experiences, residents explored what civic engagement and voting mean to them – not just as a right, but as a form of power. These spaces are about more than performances; they are about creating opportunities for women experiencing homelessness to step into their voices, claim their stories, and be heard.

The joy in the room was undeniable. Laughter, reflection, and courage filled the space as the residents supported one another and reminded us all that advocacy starts with speaking your truth.

We are constantly inspired by the strength, creativity, and leadership of the women at Susan’s Place. This is what voter engagement looks like: building confidence, community, and the belief that your voice can shape the world around you.

We are honored to welcome Moody McCarthy to the Board of Directors at Care For the Homeless.

Moody brings a genuine compassion for helping others and a deep commitment to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. His willingness to give his time and voice in support of our work speaks volumes, and we are truly grateful to have him join our community.

"We are thrilled to welcome Moody McCarthy to the CFH Board. I first saw Moody's ability to connect with an audience up close, and it struck me that the kind of empathy and honesty that makes a great comedian is exactly what we need more of in this work. Comedy has a unique power to break down barriers and open people up to seeing the world differently — and that's precisely what we need as we work to change how our city thinks about and responds to homelessness. Moody brings a fresh voice, a big heart, and a perspective our board has never had."— Surjit Chana, Board Chair

“At a time when the need for compassionate care continues to rise, strong and thoughtful leadership matters. We are excited to welcome Moody to the Board as we advance our mission and expand our reach across the city.”
— George Nashak, President & CEO

Please join us in giving Moody a warm welcome to the CFH family.

Moody has been performing stand-up comedy since 1992, with appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan, The Late Show with David Letterman, America’s Got Talent, and CBS’s The Early Show, among others. Alongside his successful career, Moody is deeply committed to using his platform to support efforts that help end homelessness and uplift individuals in need.

On Wednesday, we joined Community Health Care Association of NYS in Albany to meet with New York State legislators to advocate for the communities we serve.

Alongside our Consumer Advisory Board advocates, we discussed the interconnection of housing and health and how community health centers play a critical role in ensuring people experiencing homelessness have access to quality, compassionate care.

We are grateful to the offices who took the time to meet with us, listen to lived experience, and engage in meaningful conversation about how we can strengthen New York’s response to homelessness. Many thanks to Senator Nathalia Fernandez, Landon Dais for Assembly District 77, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, Senator Roxanne Persaud, Kristen Gonzalez for New York, Senator Brian Kavanagh, Senator Scarcella-Spanton, Assemblymember Rosenthal, Assemblymember Davila.

We look forward to continuing to work together to advance policies that support housing stability, health equity, and dignity for all New Yorkers.

The RISE UP Campaign is officially live.

People experiencing homelessness face discrimination, systemic exclusion, and violence every day, with little legal protection. That must change.

RISE UP (Rights, Inclusion, Safety, and Equality for Unhoused Persons) is a statewide campaign advancing two complementary bills to establish meaningful protections for people experiencing homelessness in New York.

Our new report outlines the scope of the problem, the national landscape, and how New York can lead in implementing protections for Unhoused New Yorkers.

You can visit our website to get information about the campaign and see how you can get involved.

Add your name as a supporter and help build momentum for change.

Care For the Homeless is proud to announce that Jonathan Santos-Ramos, previously Chief Program Officer, has been appointed Executive Director. Santos-Ramos joined CFH in June 2023 and brings more than 20 years of healthcare administration experience, beginning his service as a peer educator in a nonprofit setting as a teenager.

Raised between Puerto Rico and New Jersey, Jonathan earned his undergraduate degree at Rutgers and an MPA from Baruch. “I’m excited to take a larger role in an organization I believe so much in,” he said in a recent interview, going on to highlight CFH’s unique model and the opportunity ahead.

CFH President and CEO George Nashak and Executive Director Jonathan Santos-Ramos will continue moving Care For the Homeless forward by expanding services, enhancing programs, building deeper partnerships, and advancing innovative solutions to address homelessness citywide.

We wholeheartedly congratulate Jonathan on his new position!

We’re proud to celebrate Black History Month at Care For the Homeless — a time to honor Black leadership, service, and the enduring impact Black leaders have made on our city and our country.

This month, we were grateful to welcome Anne Williams-Isom former NYC Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, for an inspiring conversation with our team about purpose-driven leadership, community care, and leading with love. The talk included CFH team members from across our 16 locations.

We also pause to honor the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson. His lifelong work for justice and dignity helped shape generations of advocacy and change.

And most importantly, we thank and honor the Black team members and leaders at CFH whose commitment, expertise, and care power our mission every day. Your leadership matters. And we are grateful for you.
