The RISE UP Campaign is officially live.

People experiencing homelessness face discrimination, systemic exclusion, and violence every day, with little legal protection. That must change.

RISE UP (Rights, Inclusion, Safety, and Equality for Unhoused Persons) is a statewide campaign advancing two complementary bills to establish meaningful protections for people experiencing homelessness in New York.

Our new report outlines the scope of the problem, the national landscape, and how New York can lead in implementing protections for Unhoused New Yorkers.

You can visit our website to get information about the campaign and see how you can get involved.

Care For the Homeless is proud to announce that Jonathan Santos-Ramos, previously Chief Program Officer, has been appointed Executive Director. Santos-Ramos joined CFH in June 2023 and brings more than 20 years of healthcare administration experience, beginning his service as a peer educator in a nonprofit setting as a teenager.

Raised between Puerto Rico and New Jersey, Jonathan earned his undergraduate degree at Rutgers and an MPA from Baruch. “I’m excited to take a larger role in an organization I believe so much in,” he said in a recent interview, going on to highlight CFH’s unique model and the opportunity ahead.

CFH President and CEO George Nashak and Executive Director Jonathan Santos-Ramos will continue moving Care For the Homeless forward by expanding services, enhancing programs, building deeper partnerships, and advancing innovative solutions to address homelessness citywide.

We wholeheartedly congratulate Jonathan on his new position!

We’re proud to celebrate Black History Month at Care For the Homeless — a time to honor Black leadership, service, and the enduring impact Black leaders have made on our city and our country.

This month, we were grateful to welcome Anne Williams-Isom former NYC Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, for an inspiring conversation with our team about purpose-driven leadership, community care, and leading with love. The talk included CFH team members from across our 16 locations.

We also pause to honor the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson. His lifelong work for justice and dignity helped shape generations of advocacy and change.

And most importantly, we thank and honor the Black team members and leaders at CFH whose commitment, expertise, and care power our mission every day. Your leadership matters. And we are grateful for you.

We were grateful to join partners in Albany on 2/5 as part of the Advocacy Day hosted by the The Supportive Housing Network of New York.

Thank you to SHNNY for inviting us to speak on the RISE UP Campaign to share why stronger protections for people experiencing homelessness are urgently needed. The Homeless Protection Act (HPA) and the Homelessness Non-Discrimination Act (HONDA) are critical to advancing the dignity, safety, and rights for people without stable housing across the state.

We appreciated the opportunity to share testimony, answer questions, and connect with advocates across the state on how we can work together to pass the HPA and HONDA.

Care For the Homeless joined national partners in Washington, D.C., yesterday to advocate for strong federal support for Community Health Centers and the patients they serve, including people experiencing homelessness.

As part of the National Association of Community Health Centers’ Hill Day, CFH met with members of Congress to share how federal decisions around Medicaid, workforce funding, and safety-net programs directly affect access to care in our communities.

Health care is foundational, and policy must reflect that.

Thanks for standing with us, Community Health Care Association of NYS, National Association of Community Health Centers, Urban Health Plan, Inc., Sun River Health, Damian Family Care Centers, Community Healthcare Network, and Ryan Health.

CFH runs 4 homeless shelters and 1 safe haven in New York City. But what exactly is a safe haven, and why are they so important?

To enter a traditional shelter in NYC, an unhoused individual must first visit an intake center and complete medical and mental health assessments to determine appropriate placement.

Safe havens are different. They are a low-barrier shelter option designed for people experiencing chronic homelessness—offering 24-hour access, minimal entry requirements, on-site support, and private or semi-private spaces focused on safety, dignity, and engagement.

During the winter, safe havens provide a critical warm, indoor space for anyone who needs it. And during extreme cold, all of our shelters are working at full capacity to house as many people indoors as possible.

The goal is always the same: to connect people with permanent housing.

There are ~10,000 supportive housing units at risk across New York State.

Last week, we joined 200+ advocates in Albany to urge Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature to fully fund NYSSHP and other critical supportive housing programs in the final state budget.

Supportive housing works—and lives depend on it. We’re standing up to protect these homes and the people who rely on them.

Due to frigid temperatures across New York City, a Code Blue emergency is in effect. This is life-threatening weather.

People experiencing homelessness face serious risks of hypothermia and frostbite, and outreach teams are increasing efforts citywide. During Code Blue, unsheltered individuals can enter shelters without the usual screening process.

At Care For the Homeless, our teams are working tirelessly to ensure accurate, life-saving information reaches our most vulnerable neighbors and to welcome as many people as possible into safe, warm spaces.

You can help. If you see someone in need, direct them to a Warming Space or Warming Bus, or call 311 for assistance.
