Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The international community chose this date because it's the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz where over 1 million Jews had perished. But not all victims made it to a camp. Up to two million were murdered in the "Holocaust by Bullets," mass killings that occurred in the occupied Soviet Union by the N***s and their collaborators. Most of my family who perished met this fate, including my great-grandfather's stepmother, Devorah Berzak, who raised him. She, along with her son, daughter, and their families were murdered in 1941 in the forests of Lithuania.
Last week, the Claims Conference announced that around 196,000 Holocaust survivors are still alive around the world. That number is dropping precipitously each year. While we honor the memories of those stolen from us, do not forget the ones that are living, and do what you can to honor them. Fortunately, my work at allows me to do both.
