This image captures so much of what I love about our work.
I got to witness this client stop in her tracks and softly ask "isn't this just the loveliest thing you've ever seen," upon finding an old photo of her daughter amidst files that hadn't been looked through in many, many years.
Someday this daughter will be grateful she doesn't have to dispose of old job offers, $30,000 purchase documents for her parents apartment 🤯 and taxes dating back to 1969, among other things.
It was a reluctant, but desperate, client booking because she'd attempted to reorganize her office by pulling things out of stuffed closets, but suddenly found herself stuck with how to get back to work amidst her doings. After four hours I made it "workable," but throughout that time she started to see the bigger picture and after receiving my follow-up email with closet lighting and other recommendations, she replied "when can you come back?"
We exchanged some emails last week and she expressed embarrassment about the things she still had, but I replied to this Mother who's had a highly successful career not to be... that we all keep things that were purposeful or meaningful at one time.
My advice? Don't wait a lifetime to deal with your belongings. When a particular area feels overwhelming, take a time out and deal with it. Make it a priority for just one weekend. Trust me when I say that doing a little bit here, a little bit there is much easier that having to undertake a massive project you come to utterly dread.
