Union City & Newark CERTs (Community Emergency Response Team) are hosting a training session on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 7:30 PM. This hands-on training will cover fire extinguisher usage.

This fire extinguisher training will teach you how to identify potential fire hazards in your home and select the right type of fire extinguisher. You'll learn:

Know what kind of fire it is (understanding fire classification)
Get the right type of fire extinguisher for the fire
How to maintain your fire extinguisher
Learn the PASS method for using a fire extinguisher (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep)
When to stop fighting the fire and evacuate the fire scene.
Please plan to attend in person as we will not have a zoom option this month

Are you ready for our next training?
Wed Dec 10 t 7:30 Pm at Newark Senior Center.
This training provides individuals with the basic skills to respond to hazardous materials incidents, including assessing risk, be familiar with protective equipment and defensive actions to take for you and your family. Also learn about Zonehaven Aware and how to identify what zone your family is in and what to do if you receive an alert about your zone.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is a national initiative designed to train everyday residents to help themselves, their families, and their neighbors in the event of a disaster. In the critical minutes or hours before professional responders arrive, CERT members are often the first line of support in a neighborhood. Newark CERT invites you to learn more about their efforts at their Open House on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Newark Senior Center, 7401 Enterprise Blvd.
At the Open House, you’ll meet instructors, see demonstrations of the kinds of skills CERT teaches, and talk with current volunteers about their experiences. It’s a great way to find out what CERT is all about before committing to the full Academy.
