At our Voices of Recovery event, we were proud to recognize the outstanding Kean University interns who support Saint Michael’s Medical Center’s Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program.

They gained hands-on experience in counseling, addiction treatment, and patient-centered care—while supporting individuals on their recovery journeys.

We’re excited for the impact they’ll continue to make in behavioral health.

Last week, we proudly hosted our first Voices of Recovery event through our Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program at Saint Michael’s Medical Center.

Five courageous individuals shared powerful stories of perseverance, healing, and triumph—reminding us all that recovery is not only possible, but happening every day.

With over 50 attendees and the support of incredible community partners like Essex County Jail MAT program, Essex County Department of Health & Human Services, and many more, the room was filled with encouragement, connection, and hope. It was a meaningful moment of coming together to uplift one another and strengthen the path toward recovery.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us—and we look forward to continuing this important work in our community.

Recovery is possible. And these voices prove it.

What an incredible day at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) Wellness Fair!

We loved connecting with the Newark community—offering health education, foot screenings, balance assessments, grip strength tests, nutrition counseling, stroke awareness, and more.

Proud to be the only CMS 4-Star rated hospital in Essex County—and even prouder to provide compassionate, high-quality care right in your neighborhood, just steps from NJPAC.

This week, we hosted our latest Lunch with Administration session.

These small, intimate gatherings give team members from across departments the opportunity to connect, meet new colleagues, ask questions directly to leadership, and share ideas for improvement.

Led by our CEO, Dr. Alan Sickles, Chief Nursing Officer Robert Lynch, and Director of Human Resources Jessica Bernokeits, these sessions create space for open, candid conversations over lunch.

It’s just one of the many reasons why Saint Michael’s Medical Center continues to be a great place to work.

Please join us in congratulating our March 2026 WOW Award Winner, Johnathan “Johnny” Dixon, Dietary Cook 👏

During the February 23rd snowstorm, Johnny was not scheduled to work—but that didn’t stop him. He stepped up without hesitation, reporting to work and going above and beyond by driving throughout Newark to pick up fellow team members to ensure proper coverage.

Because of his dedication, we were able to continue feeding our patients and keep the cafeteria open for our staff during a critical time.

Johnny’s initiative, reliability, and commitment to our team truly embody the spirit of the WOW Award.

Thank you, Johnny, for your incredible service and for going the extra mile when it mattered most.

The Saint Michael's family is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of former State Assemblyman Albert Coutinho. A dedicated public servant and proud son of Newark, Albert played a critical role in helping to preserve Saint Michael’s during a pivotal time more than a decade ago. His commitment to the health and well-being of our community leaves a lasting legacy. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tragic loss.

A vigil in honor of Al Coutinho will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 30 at Eddie Moraes Stadium on St. Charles Street in Newark.
