Meet one of the steady, thoughtful voices guiding practice at Truly.
Lisa's approach reminds us that yoga is not about performance, but about presence, honesty, and connection both on and off the mat.
You can practice with her on Mondays at 7:30 pm and Wednesdays at 9:30 am! With over 25 years of personal practice and a deep background in healthcare, her teaching weaves mindfulness, curiosity, and compassion. Learn more about her below!
What advice would you give to someone stepping onto the mat for the first time?
Anyone can practice yoga. Come with a "Playful Curiosity": be open to learn, to feel and to pay attention. Try not to compare yourself to other people in the room! (a great tip on and off the mat) Have Fun!
What’s a book, quote, or philosophy that deeply influences your practice?
I love Dr. Gabor Mate's book "When the Body Says No". In this book Dr. Mate, a Psychiatrist, provides accounts of his work studying how emotional stress and trauma can manifest in the body as pain and illness.
This book shows us that we need to connect with the body in order to heal. If we don't process emotions and feel them, those emotions are stored in the body and can eventually cause disease. Yoga is a gateway to connecting to the body and to processing emotions in a healthy way.
What’s one thing you wish more students knew about yoga?
Here, in the west, yoga is primarily recognized as Asana, or the movement practice. However asana is only ONE of the EIGHT limbs of yoga. Yoga practice doesn’t have to include movement! You can practice yoga by completing pranayama (breathing) techniques. You can practice yoga by choosing to focus on the Yamas (guidelines for self-awareness e.g., nonviolence, truthfulness, non stealing, moderation). Yoga is SO much more than movement! It’s a beautiful opportunity to live an embodied, full and honest life of humility.
