On Jan. 31, 1961, Ham (stands for Holloman Aerospace Medical Center) became the first chimpanzee launched into space as a part of the NASA space program. Ham was originally from Cameroon, Africa, but NASA discovered him in a Florida zoo. He was one of the 75 chimps trained for space. He returned to earth, unharmed and retired in the National Zoo in Washington D.C. for 17 years. He passed away in a North Carolina zoo at the age of 25. He is now buried at the New Mexico Museum of Space History.
