The American Red Cross is experiencing a critical blood shortage as requests from hospitals exceed the available supply of blood due to the recent holiday season, intense winter weather, and severe flu season. They have issued a public appeal for blood and platelet donors. The shortage is especially serious for types O, A negative, and B negative blood. Donors of all blood types are urged to donate now and throughout the winter. You can make an appointment to give blood now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, downloading the Blood Donor App, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Licking Memorial Hospital is also hosting a blood drive this Friday, January 30, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Encourage the women in your life to make their health a priority and be an example by getting your annual wellness exam. Screenings are vital in the prevention and early detection of breast and cervical cancers. It is also important to understand your risks, including ones that you can change, such as being physically active, and those that you cannot change, such as age and family history. Talk with your healthcare provider about your risks and the screening that is right for you.
