This Sunday, Feb. 1, the Bucks and Celtics will tip off Black History Month and celebrate NBA Pioneers Day with the inaugural NBA Pioneers Classic at 3:30pm/et on ESPN.
Throughout the 2025-26 season, we continue to honor the legacy of the NBA Pioneers – Chuck Cooper, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton and Earl Lloyd, the league’s first Black players.
Chuck Cooper was the first Black player selected in the NBA Draft, going No. 13 overall as the first pick of the second round to the Boston Celtics in the 1950 NBA Draft.
Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton was the first Black player to sign an NBA contract, joining the New York Knicks from the Harlem Globetrotters on May 24, 1950.
Earl Lloyd was the first Black player to play in an NBA game. After being selected by the Washington Capitols as pick No. 100 in the 1950 NBA Draft, six months later the Capitols opened the 1950-51 season on October 31.
