Yesterday, I and a recent law school graduate had the honor and pleasure of providing career advice to the juniors and seniors of Dwight Morrow High School during their annual EmpowerED Conference in Englewood, New Jersey. Despite their youth, most of these kids asked excellent questions about my path to the bar, as well as my life as an attorney. It was much easier to connect with them the moment they found out that we had graduated from their school as well!
What struck me the most was the fact that my gender identity never came up as a topic of conversation. When I first started on my journey, I had a lot of detractors tell me that no one would take me seriously as a trans lawyer. So far, however, I have been incalculably lucky that no one whom I have ever represented has seen that as an impediment to my ability to adequately and successfully represent them.
I am happy to see that many of these kids are serious about joining the ranks of the legal profession, which is something that we desperately need during this time when the rule of law is under attack.
My special thanks go to , my 9th grade history teacher, for reaching out to me about coming to this event and for making me feel so welcome from the moment I entered the campus. I hope this program continues to grow so that the children of Englewood can still have a shot at walking through the doors that my education there was able to open for me.
