University Hospital

University Hospital As New Jersey’s public academic health center, University Hospital is committed to providing exceptional care to every patient, every time.

One of the principal teaching hospitals for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, University Hospital is the center of referral for many of the state’s most advanced medical services and specialty care programs. Our commitment to education, primary care and specialized referral services has produced the most extensive array of inpatient and outpatient services available in the state of New Jersey. University Hospital offers a wide range of specialty services including northern New Jersey’s only Level 1 Trauma Center (incorporating a trauma-intensive care unit and the NorthSTAR helicopter emergency and critical care transport system), a regional center for neonatal intensive care, the Stroke Center, the New Jersey Cardiovascular Institute (NJCI), the Cochlear Implant Program, a neurosurgical intensive care unit and a special Brain Tumor Program, the Neurological Institute of New Jersey, a federally designated spinal cord injury program, the University Center for Bloodless Surgery and Medicine, and New Jersey’s first Liver Transplant Program. The hospital has a total active medical staff of 789. With more than 19,000 admissions, and 1,700 births, University Hospital has 226,000 outpatient visits annually.

Yesterday, University Hospital leadership spent the evening in Newark’s Clinton Hill helping prep and serve a community meal at Our Community Grocery Store 🛒🩵

The night included powerful performances from poet laureate Margie “Mia X” Johnson and several talented youth poets, as well as time spent connecting with neighbors as the holiday season begins.

The power of gathering, listening, and showing up for one another is limitless. At University Hospital, our care extends into every corner of the community, and we’re honored to be there for you.

In recognition of National Clergy & Chaplain Appreciation Month, we were honored to welcome Governor Phil Murphy to University Hospital to celebrate the faith leaders who bring compassion, comfort, and spiritual care to our community.

The event was hosted by Dr. Errol Stoddart, UH Director of Spiritual Care Services, and Reverend Louise Scott-Rountree, Councilwoman-at-Large. We were also privileged to hear from Dr. George Blackwell III, our keynote speaker; Wintley Phipps, guest presenter; and musical guest Dr. Fondrea Lewis.

We are deeply grateful to our chaplains and clergy for their unwavering dedication to those facing health challenges, personal crises, and life transitions.

University Hospital and Rutgers Health officially broke ground on the first phase of a multi-year campus redevelopment plan, a transformative project that will expand access to care, education, and research – delivering on the promise of the 1968 Newark Agreements.

The first new building will feature four floors of administrative office space, 11,000 square feet of clinical space for outpatient care, and an 875-space parking garage, replacing the long-standing temporary trailers and marking the beginning of a modernized health sciences campus in the heart of Newark.

We were proud to celebrate this milestone alongside our partners and community leaders including:

Governor Phil Murphy, UH Interim President & CEO Dr. Kaitlan Baston, Incoming University Hospital President & CEO Carole Johnson, Rutgers University President William F. Tate IV, Rutgers Chancellor Brian Strom UH Chief Medical Officer & NJMS Physician Dr. Iris Herrera, UH Chair of Board of Directors Tanya Freeman, Congressman Rob Menendez, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, Official Newark Historian Junius Williams, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, NJ Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz, State Senator Renee Burgess, Assemblywomen Eliana Pintor Marin, Assemblywomen Shanique Speight and Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo.

Together, we are building the future of healthcare, and it’s taking root right here in Newark.
