Week 3: Systemic Diseases!

New research supports what dentists have suspected for a long time - infections of the mouth can be linked to a plethora of issues in the body. Some of the problems that can be caused or made worse by poor oral health include heart disease, strokes, diabetes, premature and low birth weight babies, lung disease and dementia.

Week one: The Mouth! Mouth health includes not only your teeth but also your gums, tongue and lips. There’s more emerging research suggesting the overwhelming importance of your mouth-body connection.

Primary ways to encourage a healthy mouth-body relationship is through diet, supplementation, exercise, stress reduction and proper oral care. Proper tongue posture is an important component to overall posture and well being as well. Ask us about it!

Today is national root canal day!

Root canal treatment eliminates bacteria causing infection in the root canal, preventing further infection and saving the natural tooth. During a root canal, the infected or inflamed pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected and then filled and sealed with a temporary filling.

Dr. Macko, working with your endodontist, works with you to create a beautiful, well fit custom tooth crown and our friendly and helpful staff is here to talk you through your before, during and after treatment process.

A common myth about root canal treatment is that it’s much more painful to the patient than getting a filling. Guess what? It’s not! You should not experience a severe amount of pain following a successful root canal.

Another common myth is that extraction of the tooth is better than having a root canal. Definitely not! Saving your natural tooth is always a top priority, both for aesthetics but also for your overall health. Replacing an extracted tooth requires more time in treatment and may result in more procedures being done to neighboring teeth and tissues.

Any questions? Let us know in the comments.

You’ve heard about your gut microbiome but have you heard about the importance of your body’s second largest microbiota, your oral cavity?
A healthy oral microbiota is an exceptionally complex microbial habitat that contributes to our oral and general health in many ways:

It helps to shape and drive a healthy gut microbiome
It regulates the saliva’s buffering capacity (for high PH) to neutralize acids in the mouth – the type that cause tooth erosion
It reduces numbers of pathogenic acid-producing bacteria via competitive exclusion – decreases the bacterial acid load responsible for tooth decay & cavities
It helps prevent gum disease
It decreases gum inflammation
It initiates digestion and digestive processes
It metabolizes nitrates into nitrites – a key molecule to reduce blood pressure
It prevents plaque
It prevents bad breath

April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Oral cancer screenings are done at every dental visit and can help the survival rate of oral cancer through early detection. Let Dr. Macko know if you notice any of the common symptoms of oral cancer, which include sores that don’t heal, red or white patches on the tongue, lips or sides of cheek, difficulty/pain when chewing, swallowing or speaking, an earache that doesn’t go away and pain on the lower lip/mouth.

Ask us anything about oral cancer in the comments!!
