The First Touch, The Last Touch

The first touch,
is often ours
steady hands catching a trembling breath
as life arrives, blinking and new.

And the last touch,
is often ours too
a gentle palm on cooling skin,
a whisper of comfort as life lets go.

Between those two moments
we stand as the bridge,
holding beginnings in one hand,
and endings in the other.

We cheer first cries.
We honor final sighs.
We steady the shaking,
calm the terrified,
and carry the unspoken weight
of being the first hello
and the last goodbye.

This is the sacred calling
to witness the full circle,
to touch every shade of a life,
to stand in the doorway
between coming and going.

We greet life…
and we hold it as it leaves.
Because nurses are not just caregivers
we are the hands that bookend a lifetime.
