𦡠Shin Splints? Letβs Talk.
Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy, P.C.
πββοΈ Runner or jumper β quick check:
Do any of these sound familiar?
β¬οΈ Comment YES if youβve felt:
β Pain along the front of your lower leg (shin)
β Pain that shows up at the start of a workout, then fadesβ¦
β Pain that comes back during cooldown or later that day
If so, you may be dealing with shin splints β a common overuse injury we see in runners and jumping athletes.
What Causes Shin Splints?
Shin splints often develop when the lower leg is overloaded too quickly, including:
β’ Sudden increases in running distance, intensity, or duration
β’ Running on hard or uneven surfaces
β’ Worn-out or inappropriate shoes (shock absorption matters!)
Early on, symptoms may ease during exercise. As the condition worsens, pain can persist during activity and last for hours or even days afterward.
β οΈ Important:
Some conditions can mimic shin splints, including:
β’ Stress fractures
β’ Exertional compartment syndrome
β’ Vascular conditions
Thatβs why proper evaluation matters.
How to Help Prevent Shin Splints
β Avoid sudden training changes
β Replace running shoes every 300β500 miles
β Use proper footwear or orthotics if needed
β Follow a structured strengthening and stretching program
How Physical Therapy Helps
At Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy, we help by:
β Identifying the true source of pain
β Prescribing targeted strengthening (like eccentric heel raises)
β Improving balance and lower-leg control
β Guiding a safe return-to-running program
