We are celebrating our professions 130th Birthday today! Chiropractic has been helping people live more active lives through natural care. We are proud to be a part of that tradition. My Grandfather began his practice in 1913 and my parents began their practice in 1951. As you know I began in 1984 and I am personally celebrating 40 years of serving you with my best in Chiropractic care. To date there are 13 Chiropractors in my family. I am proud to continue the passion as set before me in my heritage!

Independence Day is upon us once again. During this weekend many people take the time to relax and enjoy the summer with a cookout or barbecue and visit with family. Many begin the summer with travel to fun destinations. Safe travels to all those on the busy roads. Remember, be patient you will get there regardless of the occurrence of traffic jams. It’s better to arrive safely then to be involved in accidents. When was the last time you checked the tire pressures (spare too), oil, lights, wiper blades, washer fluid? A little bit of prep goes a long way to allow you and your family to relax.

As you know, the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, is our annual celebration of nationhood. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, announcing the colonies separation from Great Britain.

The three basic rights that all (men) have according to the Declaration of Independence is “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

In a Workout Slump? 2 Easy Ways to Get Motivated

Finding it hard to stick to your workout routine? Losing motivation to exercise at home? Here are a couple of ideas to get you back in the groove:

Use a digital device to track your steps and set a daily goal.

Whether it's an Apple watch, a Fit-bit, or an app on your phone, there are a lot of ways to count your steps. Set a daily steps goal, write it down, and post it somewhere visible. You just might find yourself getting up and moving more often.

Set up a "family challenge" and get everyone in your house involved!

It can be as simple as creating a chart with each family member's name. You get a sticker for every 30 minutes of exercise you do. At the end of the month, anyone with 20 stickers gets a reward. (Think non-food rewards to reinforce the healthy habits you're trying to establish.)

Healthy Late Night Snacks

We all have those days. You're about to go to bed, but you just can't ignore that pang in your stomach. It's 10 pm. What can you eat that will satisfy you until morning, but not wreck your diet or keep you awake?

Here are a few healthy late-night snacking options:

Apple with nut butter – Dipping apple slices in a tablespoon of a natural nut butter provides a good combination of fiber and healthy fat that will keep you satisfied until breakfast.

Handful of almonds – The fiber and protein in almonds is filling, and some suggest that the magnesium in almonds may actually help you fall asleep.

Eggs – A hard-boiled egg is an easy, protein-packed snack to grab late at night.

Oats – We typically think of oats as a breakfast food, but it's a great choice at night. The complex carbs will break down slowly and help regulate your blood sugar. Cook up some oats with your fav[o]rite milk–a warm bowl will get you in a cozy, ready-for-bed state.

Low Impact Exercises for Achy Joints

When your joints hurt, the last thing you feel like doing is exercising. But, often, it's one of the best things you can do. Strengthening your muscles provides stability around your joints and moderate exercise can actually help lessen your pain. In addition, maintaining a healthy weight and getting enough sleep are important in managing joint pain – two things exercise can help with.

Five of the best low impact exercises for those with joint and arthritis pain are: swimming, water aerobics, walking, cycling, and using an elliptical machine.

Remember, you're not looking to be an Olympic-level athlete. Take it slow and focus on getting several days of moderate, low-impact exercise in each week. Your joints will thank you.

The term "social distancing" wasn't part of our vocabulary a few months ago. But many things have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Now, we're being asked to stay home, and, for some of us, it's taking a toll on our mental health.

We're worried about our loved ones, our kids' education and our finances. Our movement is restricted and the extended time at home is starting to cause cabin fever.

We understand these worries, so we wanted to share some of the ways we're staying positive with you. If you're experiencing stress, we hope you'll find these little tips useful to help combat anxiety and improve your mental well-being.

Keep a routine

In such uncertain times, predictability feels like a luxury. Create a realistic family routine that includes time for work, play and relaxation. Take the time to enjoy healthy meals together, and do your best to get everyone to bed at a reasonable time - getting enough sleep is important for all aspects of your health.

Get outside

We can't stress this one enough. Keep your social distance by heading out early in the morning or later in the evening. Working up a sweat is a great way to reduce anxiety, so try to keep your body moving for at least half an hour.

If you can't get outside, you'll find plenty of exercise videos for every body and skill level online. Check out Walk At Home on YouTube to get started.

Find the good

There's a lot of bad news going around right now. But there's a lot of good out there too. Make a point of finding the goodness in your community and being grateful. Helping others is also a fantastic way to feel good about yourself. Consider volunteering to help an elderly community member or donating to a local charity if you are able.

Stay connected

While we can't see our loved ones in person, we can keep connected through technology. Video chat with friends and family through apps like Facetime, Marco Polo and Zoom, host a virtual get together on HouseParty or play games as a group on PlayingCards.io. Join a virtual book club, or start your own.

Limit social media

Spending too much time on social media is bad for our eyes, our posture and our stress levels. Put a time limit on social media use and spend a little extra "me" time on relaxing activities like doing puzzles, listening to music or keeping a journal.

Remember, if you feel stressed during this unprecedented time, you're not alone. Take the time for self-care, focus on the things you can control and stay positive. We're all in this together! This too shall pass.

Are you working from home because of COVID-19? Maybe you're homeschooling your kids or simply spending more time keeping up with all the latest news.

Accessing technology from the couch or kitchen in your PJs sounds comfortable at first. But poor posture leads to aches and pains, which can develop into chronic back, neck, shoulder and wrist injuries.

You might not have an ergonomic workstation in your home. But we've got your back. Working or learning from home doesn't have to be painful. And a setup that keeps you and your family pain-free doesn't have to be expensive.

5 simple ways to work in comfort and protect your spinal health.

Lift your laptop: If you're using your laptop at the kitchen table, it might be positioned too low. Place a few books or a shoebox underneath it so you are looking directly at the screen. This is easy to adjust for your smaller family members and will stop you from leaning forward and bending your necks.

Raid the linen closet: No cushy desk chair? No problem. Slip a thin cushion under your seat and a rolled-up towel behind your lower back. This lumbar support will help to prevent low back pain.

Stand up: You don't need an expensive standing desk. A simple hack like placing a large cardboard box on your kitchen table can raise your laptop enough to be effective. Try to alternate between sitting and standing. We recommend standing while on calls or watching videos to get started.

Go wireless: Wireless gadgets are affordable game-changers. A wireless headset can relieve the strain an extended cell phone call puts on your neck. Wireless keyboard & mouse combinations allow you to keep a comfortable typing position while elevating your screen as needed.

Stretch it out: Make sure every family member takes time to move at least once an hour. Neck rolls, shoulder rolls, and gentle spinal twists will help keep you flexible.

Finally, don't forget to take plenty of breaks. This is a stressful time, and it's important to give yourself the physical and mental space to stay healthy.
