Emergency Shelter Update | January 24, 2026

Our emergency shelters are working together and in constant communication to meet the needs of our community during this period of extreme cold and impending winter storm. While capacity fluctuates daily, shelters coordinate closely to adjust, problem-solve, and make space whenever possible so individuals and families can access safety.

A few important notes for today:
• United Caring Services (UCS) and the Evansville Rescue Mission (ERM) continue to provide three hot meals per day, available to anyone.
• ERM's atrium is open with snacks and hot coffee.
• ERM's Center for Women & Children is currently at capacity and operates outside of the White Flag program to support the safety and stability of the women and children staying there.
• UCS's White Flag program normally doesn't allow for adults with children, but has made an exception during this storm. However, space for families is very limited.

If you need immediate shelter, please go to UCS or ERM (our White Flag shelters) or reach out to the individual shelters listed below. Even those listed that are currently at capacity may get last-minute openings, so it never hurts to call.

WE are Dr. King’s legacy.

Every voice raised against injustice, every action taken to fight inequity, continues the tradition of progress he championed. We owe it to him—and to ourselves—not to let anyone drag us back to darker times.

So, we ask: What does honoring Dr. King look like to you? Let’s keep his dream alive.

You have a voice—and it belongs at the Statehouse. 🏛️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

LGBTQ+ Hoosiers and allies, especially young people, are invited to join LGBTQ+ Statehouse Day on January 28 from 9:30 AM–1:00 PM. Hosted by ACLU of Indiana, with IYG and LGBTQ+ organizations from across the state, this day is about learning how the Statehouse works, building advocacy skills, and connecting with community.

No matter your age or experience, your voice matters—and you don’t have to use it alone.

I also want to thank everyone responsible one more time. The 10th Annual WIKY 104.1-FM Ton of Turkeys collaboration provided so much for our community, sponsored by LyondellBasell once again in such a big way, along with Kenny Kent Toyota-Lexus, Be Happy Pie Company, and Seay Motors. Can't thank you all enough.

And then our SNAP Response efforts were driven by hundreds of people in our community. It's still surreal to think our friends at High-Score Saloon put the need on their backs and independently raised substantial funds alongside The House of Lecter, Sugarholic Body Studio, Foundations College Counseling, Penny Lane, River City Coffee & Goods, Action Staffing, Demolition Roller Derby, Swat Pest Control, Honey Moon Coffee, Talley Eye Institute, Torian Insurance, Give A Dog A Bone, Nellies Restaurant, and so many individuals. They inspired Lyle's Bar and others to create food drives. Tucker Realty dove in head first. Schnucks, IGA, and the Evansville Philharmonic stepped up their holiday collaborations with us. B-Fit Gym & Fitness, Honey Moon Coffee Company again, along with Just Rennie's and Peace4U Hospitality helped us with an event. Mayor Stephanie Terry, Governor Beshear, and Governor Pritzker went above and beyond for our neighbors. I wish I could mention every single gift and movement of support, but I'll leave it at that for today.

What a privilege to support our seniors, kids, and families with a little help through the holidays and into winter. Tri-State Food Bank has big plans for 2026 as a year of the deepest community integration yet. I can't wait to see you all in person as I bounce around our communities working to strengthen families and build forward with opportunity. Thank you all!
