In Celebration of Saint Patrick's Day, Our ED, Lorrie, hosted an incredible Whiskey Tasting event complete with delicious plates designed to enhance the flavor of each of the four rounds. Lorrie gave an in-depth history of each. We first learned about and tasted a single malt Irish whiskey, Knappogue Castle - the small plate included figs with prosciutto, dark chocolate, cracker with brie, and an Irish shortbread. Was the flavor enhanced with savory or sweet? Next we learned about another Irish whiskey, Macalallan 12 - originally made by monks based on the Scottish tradition and deemed "The Water of Life." Today it is a global leader. The snacking plate included steak, cheese, cheesecake nuts and apricots. In the 1800s' 70% of the whiskey was Irish, with Dublin being the Whiskey Capital. As of 2022 there are 42 distilleries in Ireland. We move to the US for the third - Four Roses Bourbon. Bourbon is an American spirit originally started by Scottish and Irish settlers in Kentucky. It has a 51% corn content, aged in oak containers. Most Bourbon is still produced in Kentucky. The tasting plate for the Bourbon consisted of aged cheddar, maple bacon, Irish soda bread, a chewy caramel, and hazelnut dark chocolate. We rounded out our samplings with a finished Rye, Angels Envy. This too was originally an American spirit, that from the 18th century through the Prohibition was the drink of choice. It's origins came from Sottish, Irish and German settlers in Pennsylvania and Maryland. A very thorough and delightful presentation!
