I want to take a moment to recognize one of our music therapists, Claire, for the work she has been putting into researching and developing new services for the clients we serve at Southern Crescent Music Therapy.
Claire has been studying the use of singing bowls, sound baths, and 40 Hz vibroacoustic therapy, and this week we began exploring how sound and vibration can be used together to support relaxation, mood, and nervous system regulation.
Research shows that sound baths using instruments like crystal singing bowls can reduce tension, anger, fatigue, and depression, while improving mood and relaxation. When paired with low-frequency vibration (around 40 Hz), vibroacoustic therapy has been studied for its ability to help regulate brain rhythms related to mood, attention, and emotional processing, and to help calm the nervous system.
In simple terms:
Sound + Vibration = Deep sensory relaxation
Sound + Vibration = Mood regulation
Sound + Vibration = Nervous system support
This type of music therapy approach may be helpful for individuals experiencing:
• Anxiety and depression
• Chronic illness
• Cancer treatment and “chemo brain”
• Dementia and agitation
• Chronic pain
• Stress and burnout
I’m really proud of the initiative Claire is taking to bring new, research-informed ideas into our work and expand what music therapy can look like for the people we serve. We’re excited to continue developing this into a new program in the future.
