Sleep disturbances occur with increased frequency in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) compared with the general population. These encompass sleep apnea syndromes, post-traumatic hypersomnia, insomnia, and related conditions. Poor sleep can have adverse impacts on cognition, attention, and judgment. In those with TBI, disrupted sleep has been shown to impair rehabilitation efforts and progression.

Muscle preserving uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is still the standard procedure at the level of the soft palate. Long-term data with a follow-up of 3–10 years are available, showing a success rate of 49.5% for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Success rates decrease significantly above a BMI of 30.

04/24/2011

Adherence to CPAP is insufficient in 17–54% of the patients. Data regarding interstitial treatment of the soft palate in OSA is conflicting, with success rates ranging from 17 to 66% in case series and a mean apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) reduction from 20.2 to 12.8

04/22/2011

Patients with severe OSA experience a reduction in left ventricular hypertrophy after 6 months of CPAP therapy.
