Stevia and monk fruit are not so innocent.

These and other sweeteners can alter your gut microbiome and affect your insulin response.

Artificial sweeteners and other sugar substitutes sweeten foods without extra calories. But studies show the ingredients can affect gut and heart health.

Do you get bloating after some meals…but can’t figure out which foods are doing it?

If you’ve been trying to cut out out foods trying to figure out which ones are giving you gastrointestinal issues like bloating, diarrhea, or indigestion, but you haven’t found any pattern to it…you might have a parasite!

Regular gut cleanses used to be done regularly in our great-grandmothers’ day, but they’re not as common now. Her wisdom still applies, though, and I see clients test every week for one type of parasite or another — they are way more common than most people realize.

What are the chances YOU have a parasite? Take my free Parasite Questionnaire and find out! https://p.bttr.to/3YSDlYV

When was the last time you had a full iron panel (Ferritin, Iron, Saturation, and TIBC)?

For most with Hashimoto's, it's pretty rare that it's checked. It's a panel I request often from my clients. Why? Because it's so important to the thyroid...and keys me in to other nutritional issues.

Your body needs ample amounts of iron to properly convert T4 to T3. And because most thyroid medications are T4 only, your body still needs to convert that inactive T4 to active T3 so that your body can use it. But, iron can be habitually low with Hashimoto's...making your thyroid symptoms worse!

Why is iron low in those with Hashimoto's? Thank you for asking.

It can be low for a few reasons:
✔️ Someone is taking acid blockers because of reflux (PPIs, tums, H2 blockers, etc)
✔️ Someone has parietal cell antibodies and their body is attacking the cells that create stomach acid
✔️ Someone has digestive inflammation preventing the absorption of iron
✔️ Stress!

Most of these stop the production of stomach acid...and we need stomach acid to absorb minerals in the body...like iron!

But, I often see parietal cell antibodies in those with Hashimoto's creating a low iron situation.

Aside from requesting an iron panel (which you should), some common symptoms of low iron are...
👉 Fatigue/ weakness
👉 Pale skin and eyes
👉 Dizziness
👉 Brittle nails
👉 Headaches
👉 Anxiety
👉 Restless legs

Yes, increasing your iron can help but not if low stomach acid or parietal cell antibodies are the culprits. It's important to know as well that B vitamins play a role in your iron status.

So...when was the last time you had your iron levels checked?

Toxins slow our thyroid and hormone function in a much bigger way than you’d think given that these chemicals are in such small amounts. BUT…we’re bombarded with many thousands of toxins every single day!

Learn some of the most important toxins to avoid and simple alternatives that you can use instead. Even if you regularly do a detox program to help your body, you can make it work so much better by not “re-toxing” yourself with your household products.

It's National Sun Day! Getting out into the early morning sun - WITHOUT SUNGLASSES - is so important for overall health but also circadian rhythm support.

Light shapes life. Just as real, whole foods fresh from the farm are healthiest for us, sunlight provides us with the type of light that nature intended for the human body. “Junk light” is all the manmade light that most of us bathe in after the sun sets: LED or fluorescent light bulbs both indoors and outdoors, and the brightly-lit screens on our cell phones, TVs, laptops and other devices.

The unnatural level of blue in this light spectrum messes up our circadian (day-night) rhythm, leading not only to sleep problems, but also to issues with blood sugar regulation, hormonal balance, increased appetite, thyroid and adrenal imbalances, and more!

When it comes to the thyroid gland, sunlight optimizes both T3 thyroid hormone (the “active” thyroid hormone your cells use to help make energy in your cells) and Vitamin A cycles in humans. Our use of blue-lit technology ruins both T3 and Vitamin A.

How else does lack of sunlight and excess of blue light at night affect thyroid function? Read the rest on the blog: https://cleanbalancedwellness.com/national-sun-day-may-3/

Have you thought about how much Vitamin C you're getting lately?

I think most people focus on their vitamin C intake during cold and flu season because they're aware of the link between vitamin C and the immune system.

But...did you know...vitamin C plays a role in so many processes in the body. For examples...

👉 Vitamin C plays a part in the stress response (hellooooooo adrenal health)
👉 Vitamin C increases the amount of iron you absorb from your diet
👉 Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which quenches oxidative stress, which affects all systems, including the thyroid
👉 Vitamin C is required for building collagen and muscle, making it a potent anti-aging nutrient

My point is...we should focus on vitamin C throughout the year...not just during cold and flu season. So...where can you find vitamin C in the wild? I never thought you'd ask!

✨ Bell peppers - 1 med red pepper has about 150 mg and 1 med yellow has about 220 mg
✨ Kiwi - 2 kiwis have about 135 mg
✨ Broccoli - 1 cup has about 80 mg
✨ Oranges - 1 med orange has about 70 mg

How much do we need? This is a loaded question really. The starting recommended amount is 75 mg for women and 90 mg for men.

Why do I say the starting amount? Because higher intake of Vitamin C is 1) not toxic and 2) very beneficial for adrenal function (which is intimately tied to thyroid function), helps you create energy in your body, and even helps curb appetite.

While scurvy is rare, let's take a cue from those living during the Crusades and make vitamin C an important part of your daily intake.

In the comments, let me know where your vitamin C is coming from!

Our Story

In my experience with coaching clients, I have noticed that conventional medicine typically overlooks or ignores root causes of common chronic symptoms that affect so many women, especially around midlife.

Doctors are trained to give prescription drugs or to recommend surgery for chronic health conditions. The idea of treating or preventing a “disease” with food and lifestyle changes is largely foreign to them because this is not what they learned in school. When your lab results show a trend towards disease, they are ignored until full-blown disease develops.

Registered Dietitians (RD) or Registered Dietician Nutritionists (RDN) are taught outdated, incorrect ideas about nutrition in a curriculum that’s heavily subsidized by giant agricultural and “food” corporations such as Monsanto, Coca-Cola, and McDonald’s. Doctors receive only a few hours of even this deeply flawed nutritional education in their entire eight years of med school.
