A lot of new moms are surprised when they start noticing more hair shedding a few months after giving birth.
You might see extra hair in the shower, on your brush, or around your hairline and wonder if something is wrong. In many cases, this type of hair loss is completely normal and is known as postpartum telogen effluvium.
During pregnancy, hormone levels keep many hairs in the growth phase longer than usual. After childbirth, those hormone levels shift back to normal, and many hairs enter the shedding phase at the same time. This is why the shedding can feel sudden and noticeable.
The good news is that for most women, this is temporary and hair growth gradually returns over time. That said, if the shedding feels excessive, lasts longer than expected, or you’re noticing thinning that doesn’t seem to improve, it can be helpful to have it evaluated.
At Modena Hair Institute, we work with many patients experiencing hair changes and can help determine what’s normal postpartum shedding and what options may help support hair recovery.
If you’re experiencing postpartum hair loss and have questions, our team is here to help guide you.
