You cannot rely on subcision alone to fully revolumize acne scars. While subcision is the gold standard for breaking the fibrous tethers that pull scars down, its primary role is to release the scar, not necessarily to rebuild the lost tissue volume. After the tethers are broken, we often need to introduce collagen stimulating fillers or the patient’s purified fat to replace the structural volume destroyed by past inflammation. This combined approach is the only way to ensure the scar lifts completely and stays smooth long-term.

This mother traveled all the way from Michigan after wasting time and money on cookie cutter acne scar treatments elsewhere. After years of trial and error she decided to begin a custom acne scar treatment with our team of skin restoration specialists.

We started off by creating a custom blend of TCA for TCA Cross where I carefully applied the acid using different tools such as a paintbrush and needle for the microscopic ice pick scars. We then used our pinpoint Erbium laser to break down the thick edges of her clustered acne scars. In order to address the tethered bonds beneath the surface, we performed subcision. Once the deeply rooted scars were released, we went in with Bellafill to address the volume loss she was suffering from. In order to properly treat this patient’s severe acne scars we had to built a custom treatment plan that was tailored to her specific scars and skin tone. Like many of my patients, she was experiencing a significant amount of fat loss in the temple areas so we made sure to release those tethered scars with subcision. We also used custom CO2 and Erbium laser settings to make sure I was safely and effectively breaking down the thick edges of her scars.

While both are excellent tools, Collagen Biostimulators and HA (Hyaluronic Acid) fillers serve different purposes. HA fillers provide immediate, temporary volume by literally filling a space.
