Did you know that today is Anosmia Awareness Day? Anosmia, also known as "smell blindness," is the partial or complete loss of the ability to detect smells. There are many different causes of Anosmia: viral infections, sinus and nasal diseases, head trauma, genetic conditions, and more. While often thought of as just the inability to smell pleasant things or a loss of taste, Anosmia can have serious consequences, such as the inability to detect rotten food, smoke, or gas leaks. We've all been guilty of it at least once, but using cotton swabs to clean your ears can lead to even bigger problems. A much safer option is to try ear drops like carbamide peroxide at home for a few days to soften the wax. Cotton swabs just push earwax further into the ear canal, often leaving it impacted near the eardrum. Impacted earwax can cause a feeling of fullness or blockage, hearing loss, dizziness, and ear pain. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, then it is time to see an ENT who can safely remove impacted wax in the office.

Whether it is for Celiac Disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, wheat allergies, or something else entirely, there are a number of reasons why people follow gluten-free diets. It is important to note, however, that just because something is labeled gluten-free, it does not always mean it is wheat-free. Always double-check the ingredients list to be safe if you have food allergies!
