As some prepare to head over to the family gatherings this holiday season, let's remember that not everyone looks forward to this time of the year. Whether it be due to family strongholds, grief, family dysfunction, family trauma, family drama or even toxic connections with specific members of the family, the holiday season can amplify these challenges. Sometimes, deciding not to go to Auntie's house or gathering with colleagues and friends is a better choice. AND, IT'S OK!!! Yes, an unpopular choice and discussion, but a very real experience for some. For those who may be faced with making a decision this year, let's do something different this holiday season. Let's do more than just survive this holiday season. Here are some tips to help you thrive this holiday season.

***dePreventionMonth You don't need to be a professional to know what to say to a loved one who may be in need of support. You don't have to be good at public speaking to talk with your loved one about their need for additional support. Your willingness to start the conversation, keep it going, listen, and provide your presence means more to your loved one than you might know.

Keep the momentum going after your initial conversation with your loved one. Extend the conversation by checking in on your loved one to see how they are doing. Remain connected. Acknowledge their bravery and any steps made toward asking for help, seeking support, connecting with resources, following through with suggestions and recommendations.

Alarming increase in su***de rates among Black children and teens!!!

Did you know? Black children between the ages of 5 and 12 are approximately twice as likely to die by su***de as their White peers.

Did you know? In 2021, 15% of Black high school students reported attempting su***de, with nearly 1 in 20 needing medical attention.

CONNECTIONS SAVE LIVES!!!
Connections within families, villages, communities and professional arenas help to prevent and protect against these Alarming stats. Here what you can do:

● Support evidence-based resiliency programs in Black youth with a focus on protective factors
● Promote early recognition of su***de factors
● Advocate for increased investments in programs that build a more culturally competent and minority-representative helping professionals
● Improve identification, access to care, and retention in mental health and substance use treatment for Black youth
● Stay connected with our Black youth

***dePreventionMonth reminds us that silence can cost lives — and conversation can save them. Su***de is particularly prevalent among Black men, who die by su***de at a rate more than four times that of Black women. A recent study from the University of Georgia followed more than 500 African American men from their late teens through early 20s in rural Georgia over the course of several years. “I think we often don’t look at where the disparities are and who the individuals most at risk are when we’re talking about su***de ideation” (Micheal Curtis, co-author).
