Today, where self awareness and spiritual growth are celebrated, it's easy to fall into the trap of using spirituality as a way to boost one's ego. We’ve all seen it: someone who frequently talks about their meditation routine, drops terms like “alignment” and “higher self” in every conversation and subtly implies they’ve reached a level of enlightenment that others haven't. While there’s nothing wrong with being proud of one’s spiritual journey, it's important to remember that true spirituality is about humility, connection and genuine personal growth.
Consider this: You have a friend who has recently dived deep into spiritual practices. At first, it’s wonderful to see how much peace and joy it brings them. They share their experiences with enthusiasm, and it’s infectious. But over time, you start to notice a shift. Conversations become less about mutual sharing and more about them showcasing their spiritual knowledge. Their social media is filled with posts about their spiritual milestones, often accompanied by a subtle tone of superiority.
What once felt like genuine growth now feels like a performance. This shift can create a divide, making others feel inadequate or judged. The essence of spirituality, compassion, understanding and self-awareness, gets lost when it turns into a badge for the ego.
True spiritual growth is reflected not in how loudly we proclaim our journey, but in how we treat others and how we navigate life’s challenges with grace. It’s in the quiet moments of introspection, the sincere apologies when we falter, and the patience we extend to those around us. It’s about being present and authentic, not perfect.
To anyone on a spiritual path: reflect on your motivations. Are you seeking inner peace and understanding, or validation and recognition? Spirituality isn’t about being seen as “better” or “more enlightened” than others. It’s about being true to yourself and fostering a sense of unity and compassion in the world.
Everyone should know that spirituality is a deeply personal journey. It's not a competition or a status symbol. Let it be a source of genuine growth, not ego decoration. Wear your spiritualism lightly, as an internal compass guiding you toward a more compassionate, humble and authentic life.
