A big welcome to Shanena Smith, Life Enrichment Director at The Huntington Assisted Living!

Shanena proudly served our residents at York Post Acute prior to her journey to assisted living. She shared, “I’ve been with Virginia Health Services for nearly 2 years. Throughout my time here, I’ve found a deep sense of purpose in serving our residents, community, and being part of such a compassionate organization."

She values our core values of and most importantly . As a Director of Life Enrichment, passion is at the very heart of what she does. It’s what fuels creativity, compassion, and the drive to create moments that bring joy, comfort, and purpose to our residents’ lives.

She expressed, "To me, passion means showing up with genuine care and energy every day... celebrating birthdays, holding a resident’s hand when they need comfort, or bringing happiness into a room. It’s in the details: planning programs that honor our residents’ individuality, listening to their stories, and finding new ways to make each day brighter."

Shanena joins the phenomenal team, supported by Stephen Berczek, LNHA, Stephanie Johnston, Regional Director of Sales and Operations, Ricky Ricardo Peña, VP of Life Enrichment, Ace LiPuma, Regional Director of Life Enrichment.

Today's theme was courage during our National Assisted Living Week's Ageless Adventure in Oz. We were joined by our friends from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School, who helped us paint lions (both beginner and an intermediate abstract).

Our residents showed their courage in attempting a new painting project and the students bravery in meeting new people from a different generation shined. They were amazing art buddies. Thank you so much to the OLMC students and teachers for visiting!

Monday's theme for National Assisted Living Week's Ageless Adventure in Oz was scarecrow/wisdom themed. We had a trivia contest, created scarecrow clay pots and ended the day with a candy apple bar. Also, in honor of 9/11 this week, we watched the lecture "Beauty from Ashes: Rebuilding of the World Trade Center."

It's National Assisted Living Week! We'd like to introduce you to one of our residents who embraces living here and makes our community great.

When Chong Conway knew she needed assistance following a stroke, she chose to call The Huntington home. Her son and his family live nearby in Newport News and her daughter and her family live in northern Virginia. They and her three grandchildren visit as often as they can.

Chong is originally from Korea and married a member of the U.S. Air Force. Their 42-year marriage included moves to Florida, Las Vegas and Hampton Roads.

She is devoted to reading her Bible (in Korean) daily and the priest from her Presbyterian congregation visits The Huntington to deliver service in Korean. She also participates in Bible study each Wednesday.

“I thank God that he is taking care of me all the time,” she says.

Friends from her church visit often, and keep her in supply of favorite foods from Korea, including kimchi, barbecue ribs and bulgogi.

Her mother was a very good cook, and in the winter made soups such as chicken noodle and seaweed from scratch, along with cabbage rolls and kimchi.

“She was a very good cook,” Chong says. “She couldn’t go to school (at that time in Korea), but had to stay home and learn to cook. She helps everyone in her community cook anytime someone dies or there is a celebration.”

Chong did not inherit her mother’s love for cooking, but she did embrace arts and crafts throughout her life, especially drawing and singing.

She has continued that love for crafting at The Huntington. In addition to physical activities, such as cardio drumming, chair Zumba and PHIT with Kim, she also does all of the crafts and often makes extras to give away.

Her granddaughter likes to check out what she’s made and take it home.

“She likes art and to dance. My daughter was in choir as a girl and played the flute and piano in high school,” Chong says. “I have the same generous heart as my mom and give (my artwork) away.”

She says God is teaching her patience while at The Huntington.

“I’m thankful,” she says. “And Bonnie is a good activity director. She’s great at helping us.”

Activity Director Bonnie Fitz calls her an inspiration, “to me and others here as well. You can only use one side of your body, but you are always involved.”

Happy Grandparents Day! It was an excellent start to National Assisted Living Week, as we hosted a special brunch in honor of our resident grandparents. They enjoyed a buffet of chicken waffle sandwiches, pancakes, sausage, bacon, cantaloupe, warm danish and more. Thanks to our wonderful team members who came together to make it a special day for our residents!

The theme of this year's week is Ageless Adventure in Oz, so you'll see lots of references to the 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz" and the recent "Wicked" movies throughout the week, including in decor our residents created. As we know, there's no place like home at The Huntington!

In addition to following the yellow brick road this weekend, we also kicked off watching college football on Saturday by playing a warm-up football toss game.

Guests of our residents are welcome to join us for the fun all week. Our calendar will be posted here Monday morning. We hope to see you in Oz!
