if every business gave a little…..IT WOULD AMOUNT TO A LOT!
Pheew, it’s been a week! 😮💨 As the furlough continues, needs in our community remain heightened. But we want to provide this weekly Monday night update so you can understand how the furlough is affecting local families.
Wow! Our last post was widely shared and resulted in a wave of community support we are incredibly grateful for. 🙌 In fact, we received 125 online donations, 16 of which are new monthly donors! 💛 Plus, we had dozens of groups initiate food drives on our behalf, and more than 30 people submitted volunteer applications. The media even picked up the story! 🎥https://tinyurl.com/yza3af67📰 Plus, our red donation bins are in more places than ever before. The timing couldn’t be better for this burst of community support. Thank you to everyone who shared, gave, signed up, or started a drive. Your support truly makes a difference to the people we serve. 💪
🔍 WHAT WE’RE SEEING at THRIVE
Heightened requests for help are still hitting our phones, website forms, and social media platforms. Since our last update (just 1 week ago), we received:
🥫414 requests for food
💡💧107 applications for emergency financial assistance
That means a Peninsula family requests help from THRIVE every 4 minutes during our open hours. ⏱️Lobby visitors often say, “Wow, it’s like your phone rings constantly.” — Yes, it does! ☎️Shoutout to our wonderful front desk volunteers who answer the phone all day, responding to requests for help, answering questions about donations, and everything in between. We are so grateful to have such a dedicated crew serving our community. 💙
🛒 HOW WE’RE RESPONDING
Last week, we served a record 844 people in The Market at THRIVE — the most we’ve ever served in a single week! 🎉But this week, we’re breaking that record again. We’re adding 4 additional shopping hours to The Market to accommodate more shoppers. These shifts will allow us to serve an additional 80–90 people per week.
Adding capacity isn't usually something we can do overnight...that's why we were elated when the staff at Alternatives, Inc. volunteered to cover our added Friday shift last week to allow us to launch early, and The Center for Sexual Assault Survivors came by with a donation from their fundraiser — wow! 🤝 Talk about nonprofits banding together. Please visit their pages, like them, and support them as you're able. Remember, we are one of MANY charities seeing increased service requests.
On the financial side, our assistance department distributed about $12,000 this week to help neighbors avoid eviction and utility cut-offs — always paid directly to landlords or utility companies. 🏠💡Since October, we’ve already helped 8 furloughed families with critical bills to keep them housed. We have dozens more families in the queue to be served.
💡 WHAT YOU CAN DO
Put simply — every day we’re looking for ways to expand our capacity. We know this need is long-term, and there’s no end to the shutdown in sight. Here’s where you step in:
✅ BECOME A MONTHLY DONOR – Our crew of monthly donors, soon to be called the THRIVE Hive, sustains our mission and helps us plan for expansion. Giving monthly allows us to grow and create long-term resources for neighbors in need. Join the THRIVE Hive or make a one-time gift here: https://givebutter.com/SupportTHRIVEPeninsula
✅ HOST A DRIVE – Use our Harvest Heroes toolkit (https://www.thrivepeninsula.org/harvesthero) or grab a THRIVE donation bin and place it at your school, workplace, church, or community center. The more people who join together, the more people we can serve. 🧺
✅ SHARE THIS POST – Telling your friends and family about the need is sometimes the cheapest and most effective way to help. 📲 Your share could inspire someone to make a year-end donation to THRIVE.
💬 LAST BUT NOT LEAST
We want to uplift voices from the people we served last week — because of you! Here are just a few direct quotes:
🌟“I was shocked at the amount of food we were given. I thought it would be just a little bit, and I was appreciative for anything. But my cart was full! I couldn’t believe it. I can’t afford to shop like that anymore and I’m so grateful for everything we were given. Thank you so much.”
🌟“Don’t know what we would have done without the help. I literally cried in the office.”
🌟“THRIVE gives us hope for a better future.”
The bright future we all hope for is within reach — but the key is, it lives within each of us. When we come together, we shine brighter. ✨
