Lateral protective extension 👋

A postural reflex in babies where they essentially catch themselves from tipping over with a hand out to the side

This reflex is what helps us achieve that independent sitting milestone and is typically seen between 5-9 months

🏆 Mastering the sit one wobble at a time

As a PT I’ve always struggled with rest.
Of course I give rest breaks, but I always feel like there is something productive we can be doing during that rest time, whether it’s a passive stretch or a position to optimize posture and mobility.

Then I took this course on the concept of 24-hour postural care and therapeutic lying and realized I’m not just a crazy PT who can’t stop, but I know and want families to know that our bodies are always working, whether actively working or passively working at rest (think gravity).

🤯Our posture when we are resting is the biggest predictor of our posture in sitting, standing, and walking.

So next time you or your kiddo is “resting”, think what’s passively working at that moment.
Are the hips neutral (not rotated)
Are the knees relaxed and straight (not always flexed)
Is the trunk centered (not rotated)

Use pillows and blankets to fill the gaps and facilitate a comfortable yet productive resting position!

Trick or treat in Newport, always a memorable time!

The weather this year was more appropriate for hot cocoa ☕️,but boy that wind!

Thanks to everyone who rescued my hat throughout the night! 💨

And thank you to my behind the scenes crew -my parents .m.maxwell.7 & and these cuties, giving away 500 cups of hot chocolate wouldn’t be possible without you 😘

Deep squat - one of my favorite functional movements to quickly screen a kiddo 🦵🏻

Can you stand feet shoulder width apart, toes pointing forward, arms overhead, and lower your bottom down to your heels, keeping your heels on the floor?

If not there could be👇🏻
⚠️ insufficient ankle mobility
⚠️ tight or weak hips and gluts
⚠️ tight quadriceps
⚠️ core weakness
⚠️ poor spine mobility

Deep squatting is a full body movement that won’t work (or look as pretty 🙃) if any of the above are present

🌊⚓️ Ahoy, me hearties ⚓️🌊

Each day in the therapy seas, I’m blessed to sail alongside the most precious treasures, me little patients. Their laughter, courage, and tiny triumphs sparkle brighter than gold.

As I count these blessings, I’m reminded, the greatest treasure of all isn’t found in any chest, but in the true Captain, our Creator ✨🙌

🦶 Why Does My Kid Need to Stand on One Leg? 🦶

Standing on one leg isn’t just a fun balance trick, it’s a developmental milestone and a foundation for so many everyday activities!
✨ Walking
✨ Running
✨ Stairs
✨ Hopping
✨ Kicking a ball
✨ Putting on pants
✨ Climbing playground equipment
✨ Skipping, dancing, gymnastics, and more

Early balance skills lead to confidence in movement and fewer falls while improving strength, coordination, and focus 🧠 !!

Can your child stand on one leg for 10 seconds? Try both sides! Make it a game, and let them try it with eyes closed or on a pillow!

Side-lying for play!

Benefits:
💪Works on strengthening neck muscles as child tries to lift head up against gravity
👶Helps to take pressure off child’s skull (especially those with fattening - plagiocephaly/brachiocephaly)
👋Helps child to start bringing hands to midline in a gravity minimized position
🚼 Great start to functional movement
💭side to back
💭side to tummy
💭 lying to sitting

I’ve been having fun utilizing a vibration plate the past few months for various benefits.

The tool of vibration can
🔋Stimulate muscle contractions, especially for those with increased or decreased muscle tone
🔋Improve bone density, important for non-walkers
🔋Enhance joint receptors and awareness in space
🔋Increase blood flow and overall circulation

All to enhance overall movement abilities! 🙌

Why play with your feet?

🦶 Strengthens core muscles - lifting their legs and reaching for their feet engages a baby’s abdominal and hip muscles, which is important for future movements like rolling and crawling

🦶 Improves flexibility - specifically, a baby’s hamstrings promoting healthy hip and joint mobility

🦶Develops coordination - teaching babies how to bring their limbs to midline needed for organizing bigger movements in the future
