Gaslighting is one of those terms that people use all the time, but may not be aware of what it truly means. It originally came from the 1940 movie, Gaslight, where a husband manipulates his wife into believing she is going crazy (to conceal his own crimes). He does this by doing things like turning the gas-powered lights down further each day, and then denying that anything is different. I advise my clients to watch out for this kind of insidious lying which constitutes abuse and instead to trust their own perceptions.

And about how a book can be like a therapist: a voice outside yourself you can relate to and that can shine a light into your own life.

I’m so proud of this woman who openly discusses getting help. It normalizes mental health challenges when she can go to a counseling session in the morning and go out and kick a** in the evening. Therapy works, people!

Hey y’all,
This was the first blog I ever put on my website, and in many ways it forms the core of my psychological theory. I developed the “needy pit” with my colleague, Larry Shushansky; it's about that empty place within ourselves that only self-love can fill. I have to say I use it in my daily life… yes, when it applies to myself as well. Check it out!

I was drinking iced coffee with my colleague, Larry Shushansky, at an outdoor cafe recently one afternoon. We were discussing what the kids mean when they describe someone as “thirsty”—someone they follow on social media is grasping for attention by posting something provocative.

Hi, everyone. I started a blog. I know, it's very 2007. Anyway, I'm enjoying it and I hope you will, too. Here's the first entry I want to share with you. This one might be hard to hear, but it's likely true. Thoughts?

I want to talk about today are my clients who have the sudden realization that someone in their family is a narcissist. It could be a parent, a sibling, or a child. And it can be just as devastating as finding out your romantic partner is a narcissist — maybe even more so, because these people are...
