We know that the holiday times can be hard, especially if you are supporting someone with mental health struggles.

Please find attached a flier for a great community offering of “Finding Hope” Guidance and Support for those at risk on December 18th from 6-7:30pm via Zoom.

Finding Hope gives participants practical guidance, tools, resources, and encouragement to support someone with “lived experience,” or someone who has made a su***de attempt, or experiences suicidal thoughts. It also provides participants with self-care strategies to use as they help the person with lived experience navigate their recovery.

Public health work in ! This past October, Newport Local Health Office's chronic disease designee Nickey Locke led the students at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Barton for National Walk to School Day. About 75 pre-K to eighth grade students joined Health staff and the local sheriff’s department. "It was a wonderful example of how a small community can come together to promote health and safety," Nickey shared.

Walking to school helps students stay active and healthy, giving them a burst of energy to start the day. It also reduces traffic and pollution around schools, creating a safer, cleaner environment for everyone. Nice work, Newport!

Temperatures are getting colder. ❄️ As you heat your home, prevent home fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Install and test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups, and make sure you keep anything that can burn 3 feet away from heat sources.

It’s World Kindness Day! Studies have shown that acts of kindness can improve happiness and a sense of engagement with life, reduce anxiety, symptoms, and increase a sense of social connectedness! Even cooler? Kindness can have a profound impact on not just the people on the receiving end or giving, but on people WITNESSING it!

There are so many different things that you can do on a small scale to spread kindness – from reducing the spread of germs by washing your hands, getting your flu shots, and staying home when you’re not feeling great, or practicing small acts of kindness like holding the door for someone, saying hello, or letting someone go ahead of you in line. You can always check in with your neighbors and see if they need help with something or donate to your local food shelf for pantry. The options are endless. How are you going to spread a little kindness today?
