For anyone navigating life after a heart event or stroke, the hospital stay is just the first step. The real work (and the real wins!) happens during rehab. We use a physician-led inpatient program because it actually works—it cuts hospital readmission by 30% and helps people get back to their own beds faster. 🏡✨

Our team is here 24/7 to help you regain your strength, mobility, and confidence. We don’t just treat the heart; we support the whole person.

"I was a shy, quiet, insecure person when I started working," Lillian remembers, looking back on a career that has spanned half a century.

She started on the evening shift at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, managing a switchboard where lines would light up like a map, requiring her to plug heavy cords into jacks to connect calls. Registration was done by typing all the information on a form with multiple carbon copies.

"There are some advantages to modern technology," she says.

But for Lillian, the tools were always secondary to the mission. She recalls the nerves of that first day and the kindness of the woman who trained her. That patience left a mark. "I was not the fastest learner," she admits, "but I stuck with it until I understood it. It is important to me to do my job well."

That dedication has carried her through fifty years of switchboards and registration, and her current roles in Neurology pre-admissions and Patient Financial Services. Along the way, she didn't just learn how departments work together; she learned how people hold each other up.

"My jobs here over the years always involved interacting with others," she says. "I am happy to share a smile, listen to those who need a listening ear, hold a hand, or share a kind word. We never know when it helps someone to let them know we care."

Today, she remains a bridge between the hospital’s history and its future. For her, the reason for staying five decades is simple: it’s about the "family-friendly atmosphere" and a deeply held belief in the hospital’s purpose.

"As it says in Galatians 6:2, we are to help carry one another’s burdens," she explains. "NMC Health is doing that, and hopefully will be doing that for many years to come."

After 50 years of carrying those burdens alongside her coworkers and patients, one thing is certain: NMC Health wouldn't be the same without her.

Help us congratulate Lillian on 50 years of serving the community!

You wouldn't trade this life for anything. Every milestone, smile, and connection is worth the long days and nights and the constant advocacy.

But we also know that being the "everything" for the person you love can take a toll you don't always talk about.

Rounding out our three-way tie for the BEE Award, we are proud to honor our final recipient: Dr. Joseph Meier, from our Emergency Department!

When a child with autism visits the ER, the environment can be overwhelming. Dr. Meier recognized this and stepped up to provide more than just medical care; he provided an environment where the child felt heard and included. One grateful patient shared:

"Dr. Meier did an excellent job! It is hard to find someone who understands the needs of an autistic child and knows how to go slow. He allowed my son to make his own decisions and feel like he was heard. He was compassionate and understanding."

We're so proud of Dr. Meier, who prioritized patience and provided a friendly face with exceptional care.

Please join us in the comments by giving a huge "Congratulations" to Dr. Meier!

Do you have a passion for providing compassionate, patient-centered care? We're looking for more friendly faces to join our award-winning team at NMC Health. See our current openings and apply today: https://tinyurl.com/lovemynewjob.

That salt might taste good today, but your body is keeping a tab you don't want to pay.

♥️ Stiff arteries, making every heartbeat a struggle
🧠 Cognitive decline, due to restricted brain blood flow and "fog" years down the road
🦴 Weakened bones, because your body "borrows" calcium from your bones

Don’t wait for a "later" health scare to make a change. Our Family Medicine team is here to help you track your vitals and find a balance that works for you.

The History of Newton Medical Center

More than a century ago, Dr. John T. and Lucena Axtell founded Newton’s first hospital, Axtell Hospital. For four decades, the Axtells served the community until they passed on the hospital to the Kansas Christian Missionary Society. At that time, the name was changed to Axtell Christian Hospital, a Christian Church/Disciples of Christ organization. At the turn of the century, Reverend David Goerz and Sister Frieda Kaufman founded Bethel Deaconess Hospital as a mission of the Mennonite Church. Mennonite deaconesses remained involved with the hospital’s operations until 1983. On Jan. 1, 1988, the two hospitals merged to become Newton Medical Center.
