Our volunteers truly are the heart of NMC Health! ♥️

We had a wonderful time celebrating our incredible volunteers at our appreciation event earlier this week. To keep the "heart" theme going, Dr. Michael Ritchie of NMC Health Cardiology Specialists joined us to share insights and answer questions about cardiac health.

Thank you, volunteers, for all the ways you serve!

Come volunteer with us! Check out the opportunities at https://bit.ly/3M5Qc2E.

One of the easiest ways to find a new group is to join an existing one. Often, you’ll hit it off with the regulars and become "part of the gang" before you even realize it!

Try joining a group based on your interests or skills, like a bowling team, softball team, or walking group. You could also join a hobby club for woodworking, quilting, or gardening.

Whether you’ve just joined a group or already have a group of friends, keep the bonds strong.

🗓️ Agree to meet weekly or monthly, then put it on the calendar.
🏡 Meet at a favorite local spot or take turns hosting at home.
🥾 Share an activity together, like volunteering or exploring a local trail.

This Earth Day, we’re celebrating from the rooftops! 🌍☝️

We recently installed new AC units over our Emergency Department and North end that use R-32 refrigerant. This new tech is 30% more eco-friendly than what we used before and runs much more efficiently.

How else do we help protect the Earth?
- Recycling batteries, paper, bottles, cardboard, cans, etc.
- Using recycled and recyclable products when possible
- Providing antibiotic-free poultry and rBGH free yogurt and milk in the Sunflower Cafe
- Offering food in eco-friendly packaging when economically feasible
- Offering waters and flavored teas in bulk to minimize bottled beverage use
- Training Sunflower Cafe staff to use measuring skills to better calculate estimated product usage to minimize waste
- Reducing waste and excessive chemicals to the drainage systems through metered chemical dispensers
- Offering a wildflower and butterfly garden to attract bees to our NMC Health hives and monarch butterflies to our Healthy Lifestyle Campus
- Replaced flooring in clinics with a product verified to be Carbon Neutral
- Installed flooring that can be cleaned with less chemicals
- Energy-efficient LED lighting added in parking lots and throughout the hospital
- Use of non-acidic toilet cleaners
- Energy-efficient generators

Connecting with a group offers a different kind of mental boost than one-on-one time. Being part of something larger than yourself – whether it’s a hobby club, sports team, or church – helps define who you are.

Here is why group connection is so important for your well-being:

1️⃣When you belong to a group, you have more people to turn to.

2️⃣Being part of a group helps you define who you are.

3️⃣Hearing different stories and opinions helps keep your mind sharp and expands how you see the world.

4️⃣The collective energy of a group can push you to try new things or stick with a healthy habit—like this wellness challenge!

The History of Newton Medical Center

More than a century ago, Dr. John T. and Lucena Axtell founded Newton’s first hospital, Axtell Hospital. For four decades, the Axtells served the community until they passed on the hospital to the Kansas Christian Missionary Society. At that time, the name was changed to Axtell Christian Hospital, a Christian Church/Disciples of Christ organization. At the turn of the century, Reverend David Goerz and Sister Frieda Kaufman founded Bethel Deaconess Hospital as a mission of the Mennonite Church. Mennonite deaconesses remained involved with the hospital’s operations until 1983. On Jan. 1, 1988, the two hospitals merged to become Newton Medical Center.
