Counselor Sarah Mumford, MT-BC presented at the annual Southeastern Region Conference of the American Music Therapy Association, Inc.

Mumford shared the theories and expertise that led her to develop a three-hour course, “Leaving a Legacy Through Song: Songwriting in the End of Life”.

The course encourages fellow therapists to integrate empathy and vulnerability into care.

“I feel there is so much to be gleaned from walking alongside those who are trying to navigate life after loss,” shares Mumford. “As professionals, we’re taught that it’s not okay to be vulnerable with the people we serve. My hope is that this course dispels that belief and encourages us to reframe that thought, recognizing that vulnerability is what connects us to the people we serve.”

A Board-Certified Music Therapist with nine years of and care experience, Mumford has worked in areas of cancer survivorship, grief care, and veterans care. Mumford is also a singer-songwriter with a passion for music’s ability to change lives and transform therapeutic work. We are honored to have her on the Bereavement team.

When access to quality care is limited, children and families feel the weight of what’s missing.

Nurse Practitioner Kayla Overstreet, MSN, APRN, CPNP-PC, is working to transform the community-based approach to serious illness care and helping lead the conversation on what’s next.

This past month, Overstreet presented at a national conference in San Diego, California. She shared a distinct model of community-based pediatric care alongside models presented by organizations from Texas and Ohio. Together, they explored how their serious illness care programs are structured, outcomes they’re achieving, lessons learned, and real-world strategies that help and families access timely, close to home.

In a field where many communities still lack pediatric care programs, Overstreet encouraged attendees to adapt proven approaches and take meaningful steps toward closing critical gaps in care.

We are honored to have Kayla on the Cardinal Kids team and proud to see her leadership shape a better future for children and families everywhere.
