Counselor Sarah Mumford, MT-BC presented at the annual Southeastern Region Conference of the American Music Therapy Association, Inc.

Mumford shared the theories and expertise that led her to develop a three-hour course, ā€œLeaving a Legacy Through Song: Songwriting in the End of Lifeā€.

The course encourages fellow therapists to integrate empathy and vulnerability into care.

ā€œI feel there is so much to be gleaned from walking alongside those who are trying to navigate life after loss,ā€ shares Mumford. ā€œAs professionals, we’re taught that it’s not okay to be vulnerable with the people we serve. My hope is that this course dispels that belief and encourages us to reframe that thought, recognizing that vulnerability is what connects us to the people we serve.ā€

A Board-Certified Music Therapist with nine years of and care experience, Mumford has worked in areas of cancer survivorship, grief care, and veterans care. Mumford is also a singer-songwriter with a passion for music’s ability to change lives and transform therapeutic work. We are honored to have her on the Bereavement team.
