For Women’s History Month, we recognize Martha Bernal, a trailblazer who helped expand cultural understanding in the field of psychology. As the first Latina to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in the United States, she broke barriers and paved the way for greater representation in mental health research and care.
Through her work, Bernal emphasized the importance of culturally responsive mental health services and helped open doors for future generations of psychologists. Her legacy continues to shape a more inclusive and understanding mental health movement
