💓 This week, our team from Matthew's Place hosted a Valentine’s Day party for their residents and had such a sweet time celebrating! The group enjoyed tacos, played fun games, and raffled off a Valentine’s Day basket. As you can see, lots of smiles and wonderful moments demonstrated how special the occasion was. Plus, several residents who rarely attend community events turned out, so it was a definite tacos-and-love success! 🌮 🥰

🎶 "Do you want to build a snowman?" Anytime snow-starved North Carolina gets a measurable amount of the white stuff, the answer is a resounding 'yes!' ❄️

Here, resident Larry Pagella at Matthew's Place, our affordable housing community in Albemarle, NC, shows off his own diminutive Frosty, complete with carrot nose and sunglasses. Larry made it known that you never get "too old" to build a snowman. ☃️

Also pictured is Lynn Bolen, onsite manager at Matthew's Place, holding a shovel and looking like all of us over the past two weeks! 😂

❄️ On the heels of forecasting two weeks of challenging winter weather, John Ahrens, chief meteorologist at WSOC-TV, came to Matthew's Place today to visit with our housing community residents. We were thrilled to welcome him to Albemarle!

John shared insights about meteorology, offered a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to deliver the forecast each day, and provided helpful tips about staying safe during severe weather. His visit was not only informative – but it was also genuinely uplifting. 🌞

With his friendly personality, kindness, and easy way of connecting with people, John quickly became a favorite with our folks. They absolutely loved him, and the great conversations he sparked continued well after his visit ended. He definitely made the day special! 🫶

🎉 This week, our EveryAge communities have been celebrating . These creative employees enrich the lives of residents in care facilities through tailored experiences, bringing joy, purpose, and meaning to the lives of the people they serve.

The activities they share honor individuality and enrich daily living, and we're grateful for the dedication and compassion of our hands-on activities teams.

☀ Today is Health and Human Service Sunday as observed by the United Church of Christ. This annual observation honors servant leadership and offers support for health and human service workers. Its theme of hope and healing seeks to create a just, caring, compassionate, and equitable world. ⚖

Health and Human Service Sunday also recognizes the many health care centers, hospitals, affordable housing communities, older adult communities, and service centers for children, youth, and families across the US affiliated with the UCC. Thank you to all team members who give of yourselves and promote well-being in the people we serve. 💙

🌬️❄️ With dangerously cold temperatures expected across NC and VA this weekend, now is the time to step up for our older neighbors. In‑person check‑ins and a solid plan are essential before the winter storm arrives this Saturday.

Start with a quick safety checklist:
⚠️ Is their heating system working properly?
⚠️ Do they have enough food?
⚠️ Do they have their medications and essential supplies?

Once you’ve checked the basics, here are five ways you can make a big difference:

1️⃣ Make a plan ahead of time. Reach out now so they know they can count on you if the weather gets rough.
2️⃣ Check in before and after storms. A quick call or knock at the door can ensure they’re warm, safe, and prepared.
3️⃣ Stay in regular contact. Extreme cold can be isolating — even a brief daily check‑in matters.
4️⃣ Help with shoveling and icy walkways. Preventing slips and falls is crucial. If you’re already outside clearing snow, consider doing their walkway too.
5️⃣ Bring a warm meal, hot drink, or essentials. And if you live in North Carolina… you know the drill: don’t wait for them to ask — just take them the milk and bread!

❄️❤️ Let’s show what a caring community looks like.

Check on your neighbors. Keep each other safe.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with his tireless work in promoting civil rights. King dedicated his life to speaking out against inequality, injustice, poverty, and war before being assassinated in 1968. This national holiday also seeks to draw attention to King's use of non-violence to bring about meaningful change and to his belief in the value of public service.

🎄 We're so grateful for the incredible generosity of local communities during the holiday season. At Matthew's Place, our affordable housing community in Albemarle, NC, for example, several thoughtful organizations lavished our residents with love! 💫

✳️️ MT Zion Missionary Baptist Church - Badin, NC delivered individual Christmas bags for all 34 of our residents to ensure that everyone felt special!
✳️ Providence Church of God presented a generous monetary donation that helped make Christmas brighter for our residents.
✳️ Immanuel Baptist Church donated cozy hats, gloves, and scarves to keep our residents warm this winter.

The kindness and support they all displayed remind us what the holiday season is all about—community, care, and love. Thank you! 🩷

🎅 Each year, our Home Office team gets together for a celebratory Christmas luncheon, where we play games, eat exceedingly well, and enjoy each other's company.

🍴 This time, we gathered at FOURK and enjoyed a delicious three-course meal with plenty of options to fit everyone's tastes. It's so satisfying to put work talk aside and just take delight in our colleagues and the joys of the season. We hope yours is merry and bright too! 🌟
