This is often known as sundowning, and it’s more common than many families realize.

Here are a few possible reasons:

1. Fatigue builds up. As the day goes on, the brain becomes more tired, which can make confusion worse.

2. Low lighting and shadows. Dim environments can make it harder to see clearly, which may increase disorientation or fear.

3. Disrupted body clock. Changes in sleep patterns can affect how the brain recognizes time and routine.

4. Less stimulation. Evenings tend to be quieter, which can sometimes increase feelings of confusion or unease.

5. They may be trying to meet a need they can’t explain. Hunger. Thirst. Pain. Needing the bathroom. Even discomfort or anxiety.

Instead of saying what they need, it can come out as confusion, agitation, or restlessness.

This is the part many families miss.

Small changes can help. A consistent routine, better lighting, and having someone present during these hours can make evenings feel calmer and more manageable.
