After age 30, adults can lose up to 3 to 8 percent of muscle per decade. This speeds up after 60.

That loss affects strength, balance, and how easy everyday tasks feel.

The good part. Muscle can still be rebuilt.

Simple strength exercises done a few times a week can help maintain and even increase muscle, even in your 70s and 80s.

How many can you actually check off here?

[ ] I check in on people, even when I’m busy
[ ] I notice small changes others miss
[ ] I stay calm when someone is struggling
[ ] I listen fully, not just to respond
[ ] I make people feel safe and understood
[ ] I step in without being asked
[ ] I stay patient, even on long days
[ ] I remember the little things that matter
[ ] I put someone else’s needs before my own sometimes
[ ] I still show up, even when it’s inconvenient

If you checked at least 3, you already have what it takes.

A loved one who seemed okay during the day may become more confused, restless, or anxious in the evening.

This is often known as sundowning, and it’s more common than many families realize.

Here are a few possible reasons:

1. Fatigue builds up. As the day goes on, the brain becomes more tired, which can make confusion worse.

2. Low lighting and shadows. Dim environments can make it harder to see clearly, which may increase disorientation or fear.

3. Disrupted body clock. Changes in sleep patterns can affect how the brain recognizes time and routine.

4. Less stimulation. Evenings tend to be quieter, which can sometimes increase feelings of confusion or unease.

5. They may be trying to meet a need they can’t explain. Hunger. Thirst. Pain. Needing the bathroom. Even discomfort or anxiety.

Instead of saying what they need, it can come out as confusion, agitation, or restlessness.

This is the part many families miss.

Small changes can help. A consistent routine, better lighting, and having someone present during these hours can make evenings feel calmer and more manageable.

If you’ve noticed this, you’re not alone and support can make a real difference.

Weakness in seniors doesn’t always happen slowly.

Sometimes it speeds up quietly, and families only notice when it starts affecting daily life. Getting up becomes harder. Walking feels less steady. A small trip turns into a fall.

And in many cases, it’s not just aging.

One of the most overlooked causes is not getting enough protein.

Without enough protein, the body starts to lose muscle faster. This can lead to:

- Loss of strength and balance
- Higher risk of falls and injuries
- Slower recovery after illness or hospital stays
- Difficulty with simple daily tasks

What makes this concerning is how easy it is to miss. Appetite changes. Meals get smaller. Some seniors skip protein without realizing it.

Over time, that adds up.

Here are simple ways to help:
- Include protein in each meal like eggs, fish, chicken, beans, or yogurt
- Offer smaller meals more often if appetite is low
- Choose soft, easy-to-eat options when needed

Catching this early can help your senior loved ones stay stronger, more stable, and safer at home.

If you’ve noticed small changes in strength or movement, it may be worth taking a closer look.
