Measles: A Preventable Disease with a Dangerous Past

Before the measles vaccine in 1963, millions of children got sick every year, and many didn’t survive.
Measles isn’t just a rash. It can cause pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death.

Thanks to vaccines, we have dramatically reduced measles cases, but it’s still a threat when vaccination rates drop. Let’s not go backward. Vaccination keeps our communities strong, safe, and protected.

November is Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor and celebrate the incredible dedication and compassion of caregivers everywhere! Being a family caregiver is an extraordinary act of love, kindness, and compassion. Day in and day out, you devote your time, energy, and heart to caring for someone else, which may even look like putting their needs above your own. It’s a role that can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also demanding.

This month, we want to remind all caregivers that it’s okay, and even essential, to take time for yourself. Prioritizing your well-being isn’t selfish; it helps you stay strong, healthy, and able to give the best care possible. Whether it’s taking a few quiet minutes to breathe, getting outside for a walk, leaning on friends or family, or seeking professional support, self-care matters.

Thank yourself for all that you do. Celebrate the love that you give. And remember: you deserve care and compassion too!

frightening, some children develop traumatic grief responses, making it hard for them to cope with
their grief.

Sometimes it's harder to believe the negative things we tell ourselves. Taking the time to tell yourself uplifting thoughts to re-frame your mindset in a positive way is a good way to practice self-care.

Timing Matters

Did you know the childhood vaccine schedule isn’t random? It’s carefully designed based on decades of research to protect kids at the right time when they’re most vulnerable.

From birth through adolescence, each vaccine is timed for maximum protection and safety.

Advance care planning is an important step in ensuring your healthcare preferences are known and respected. It’s a process that helps you make decisions about your care ahead of time, in case you are unable to communicate your wishes later. This can include choosing a healthcare proxy, making decisions about medical treatments, and thinking about your values for end-of-life care.

We understand these conversations can be tough, but we’re here to help. The advance care planning service is complimentary, and we have a template to make the process easier. Taking the time now can bring peace of mind in the future for you and your loved ones. If you're ready to complete this important document, feel free to reach out to BCHIP at (267) 291-7882 or fill out the contact form on our website. We look forward to assisting you!
