Dry Needling What is it and why do we do it?

What is It: Dry Needling is a method of soft tissue work in which a thin myofilament needle is inserted into the muscle at the site of a suspected trigger point.

Why Do it : There is mixed evidence regarding the use of dry needling in the treatment of patients. Its suspected uses are for : Pain reduction, release or inactivation of trigger points, and normalization of dysfunctions at the motor end plate of a muscle.

Why Do We Dry Needle at Elevation ?
With the mixed evidence you may be asking yourself if you should have dry needling performed or why we even perform it. It comes down to experience and patient reported outcomes.

Using dry needling as an adjunct to therapy can be very beneficial. Dry needling in our experience has reduced clients pain, decreased muscle tenderness and increased muscle activity. By performing dry needling we are often able to give our patients access to ranges of motion they were previously not comfortable enough with allowing more of a benefit from the therapeutic exercises that will follow a typical dry needling session.

Frequently Asked Question:
How often should I be doing my exercises?

The short answer it depends!

At Elevation Performance and Therapy we typically see a patient 1 time every 1-2 weeks. During this visit we will go through how you have been since your last visit, some manual therapy and a discussion on progression of exercises. From this and our virtual home exercise program you should be able to complete the exercises required for your rehab without the hands on assist of a Therapist.

Each individual plan of care is different and will require you to participate with different frequencies of exercise but a good general plan is to complete your prescribed exercises 3-4 times a week. For our model of therapy this means 1x a week with your therapist at 2-3 x a week on your own at home or in the gym.
