👣👣👣Foot Fact Friday👣👣👣

Did you know that the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet have more sweat glands than any other part of your body? Each foot has approximately 125,000 sweat glands! The soles contain more glands per square centimeter than any other part of the body. They produce approximately half a pint of perspiration daily.

Excessive sweating of the feet is called plantar hyperhidrosis! An antifungal foot powder will help to keep feet dry and odor-free. And antiperspirant deodorant is an easy-to-use remedy for sweaty feet. These products work by temporarily blocking the sweat glands.

Look for shoes made from a breathable fabric such as canvas or leather. Avoid patent or plastic shoes as they do not allow a good airflow and may trap sweat inside the shoe. If your toes are squished inside your shoes, that will reduce the air flow to them and keep the temperature higher, especially between your toes.

Look for absorbent or deodorizing insoles to wick away moisture and prevent foot odors. Using black tea may be an effective way to stop sweating. This unusual remedy involves soaking the feet in a basin of warm water with two black tea bags. The tannins in the tea close the pores in the skin, reducing sweating.

Good foot hygiene is essential to managing excessive sweating and preventing foot odors and infection. Always opt for socks made from merino wool or synthetic blends. Smartwool, Darn Tough, PEDS Coolmax, and R-Gear Drymax are some examples.

It's 👣👣👣Foot Fact Friday!👣👣👣

Did you know that all nails should be cut straight across? The nails shouldn't dig down on the sides. The clipper should be guided straight across the nail of each toe and one should avoid cutting nails into a curved shape.

Larger clippers are meant for larger nails, and will be easier to cut toenails with than fingernail clippers. Keep clippers and any other tools you use on your toes disinfected. If you have a nail that has fungus in it, cut that nail last so that you don’t spread fungus to subsequent nails that you cut.

You should leave your nails a little on the longer side. Don't cut nails too short, as it's another reason ingrown toenails occur. It can also leave your toenail susceptible to infection — plus, it hurts!
Don't try to clip each toenail all in one cut. Make a few small cuts across your nail.

If you don’t feel comfortable cutting your toenails, or they are too difficult to cut, save it for your local podiatrist to take care of. In between visits to your Podiatrist, if your toenails become uncomfortable, you can file them with an emery board. Gently move the nail file in one direction across the top of your toenail until it is smooth and the appropriate length.

Time for another 👣👣👣Foot Fact Friday!👣👣👣

Do you know how supportive your shoes are? Contrary to popular belief, more flexibility in the shoe isn't always a good thing. In fact, although a good shoe has a little bit of flex, it actually needs to have a certain level of stiffness in order to support your foot. There's even a little test you can do to find out whether or not you have a good pair of shoes. It's called the flex test! All you have to do is take your shoe and hold it by the heel and press the toe of the shoe into the ground. The point where the shoe bends and creases is considered the “flex point”. The flex point of the shoe should match the bending point of your foot. Too much flexibility in other parts of the shoe (I.e.- the arch) can cause problems like arch pain, ball of the foot pain, or even plantar fasciitis. If you are unsure about whether your shoes/sneakers are right for you, bring them in to your Podiatrist so that they can help you evaluate them!
