THIS!!
One of the things we were recently reminded of by our son’s S2C practitioner was something that felt both simple and an important reminder: make sure he is listening to age-appropriate things.
She was very clear - we don’t need to take away the videos he loves. Many of them are toddler shows, and they bring him comfort and joy. But she gently reminded us that he is ALWAYS listening. Always absorbing. Always learning… even when it doesn’t look like it.
I knew this deep down. I’ve always believed it. But hearing it spoken out loud was the reminder I needed. It stuck with me.
The very next day, I did what many of us do - I asked the internet. I typed: “What are the top 5 podcasts 21-year-old boys should be listening to?”
Then I paused… and rephrased.
“And which ones could they listen to with their parents?” (because, let’s be real 😂)
What came back was actually an incredible list. And in that list, I discovered two podcasts that I absolutely love - both centered around sound and music.
The first is "Song Exploder." Each episode is about 15–20 minutes and breaks down how a single song was made. And wow… my naive self truly believed a band and singer just walked into a room and played/sang a song. 😂 There are layers upon layers that need to come together to make that final produced song. They cover all kinds of music, and there’s something there for almost everyone.
The second podcast has become my favorite: "Twenty Thousand Hertz." It’s described as “the stories behind the world’s most iconic and fascinating sounds.” These episodes are a little longer mostly around 30 minutes.
I have learned SO much. Fun facts, history, and tiny details you never knew you needed to know. I honestly feel like I could be a Jeopardy! contestant now (and yes, they even did an episode on the Final Jeopardy jingle - lol).
The episode I listened to today: "Sonic Happiness: A Guide to Feeling Better Through Sound," was one of those messages sent to me at the right time - that made me re-think my life and thoughts about my son - in the best way. It made me think about Eric and how deeply tuned in he is to sound, melody, rhythm, and repeating favorite audio clips over and over.
Those repetitions aren’t just preferences. They’re regulation. Comfort. Joy. Again, in my heart I knew they were important to him - but in my mind I feel like I am aware of a little more of the science of his brain and why he loves it so much.
Anyway, if you’re looking for something super interesting to listen to with your kids - or even just for yourself while folding laundry, driving or cooking dinner - I can’t recommend these enough.
You just might learn something. 💙
