Earlier this month, leaders from across the global agri-food industry gathered in Amsterdam for the Women in Food and Agriculture (WFA) Summit. From powerful conversations and hands-on workshops to a screening of World Without Cows, the event highlighted the importance of mentorship, leadership and collaboration in shaping the future of our industry.

We were proud to see Alltech voices represented on stage — including Dr. Lilian Weber, who shared her career journey and encouraged women to confidently forge their own professional paths.

With this Sunday, we’re especially grateful for the visionary women across our industry — and within the Alltech team — who continue to lead, inspire and drive progress.

Belief has always been at the heart of the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition, and on Sunday at the 21st annual event, that belief was on full display.

Sixteen exceptional finalists took the stage, competing for more than $700,000 in prizes and scholarships. Yet what moved me most was not the scale of the awards, but the depth of commitment each student brought to the moment — years of discipline, courage and quiet perseverance, culminating in a few powerful minutes on stage.

This competition began more than two decades ago with a friendship between my father, Dr. Pearse Lyons, and Dr. Everett McCorvey of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre. Together, they shared a conviction that young people should be encouraged to “do what makes their hearts sing.” That conviction — that belief in potential before it is fully realized — has grown into one of the largest opera competitions of its kind in the world.

Since its inception, the program has enabled more than 200 students to pursue their musical ambitions and has awarded more than $12 million in scholarships and prizes. This year’s undergraduate and graduate winners now join a remarkable community of vocalists whose journeys began with someone choosing to believe in them.

To every finalist who stepped onto that stage, congratulations. Getting there required sacrifice, resilience and trust in your own voice. Your futures are bright, and we are honored to play part in the path ahead.

I am deeply grateful to our judges, our partners and the University of Kentucky community for continuing to elevate the arts and invest in the next generation of performers. The arts foster creativity, empathy and imagination — qualities our world needs now more than ever.

At Alltech, we often say that belief powers performance. When families, mentors and communities come together to support a young person’s dream, extraordinary things can happen. Sunday evening was a reminder that when belief is shared, it does more than inspire a performance — it shapes a life.

“One thing we always talk about this time of year is friendship — that’s how this all began.” —Dr. Mark Lyons, president and CEO of Alltech

The Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition was built on a simple principle: belief in friends and in making dreams come true.

Alltech’s founder, Dr. Pearse Lyons, often challenged his friends and colleagues to ask themselves why his dreams for them were bigger than their own. That belief — in big dreams and in the power of friendship — led the late Dr. Lyons and Dr. Everett McCorvey, director of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre, to launch this competition 21 years ago.

Today, the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition attracts top vocal performers from around the globe, helping them overcome financial barriers as they pursue their musical dreams and paving the way for successful careers. The program has also played a pivotal role in the rise of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre Program, now widely regarded as one of the best in the nation.

“Getting here wasn’t easy, and I think you all have amazing careers in front of you,” Dr. Mark Lyons said at yesterday’s 21st annual competition. “From everyone here today, you have our full support. We’ve got your back — go and do incredible things, and make those dreams come true.”

Judges selected multiple winners in both undergraduate and graduate categories. In addition to cash prizes, recipients earned scholarships to attend UK, including several full-tuition awards. This year’s competition featured eight undergraduate and eight graduate competitors.

Meet the overall winners of the 21st annual Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition:

• Janeway Howard — Pearse and Deidre Lyons First-Place Undergraduate Award and Scholarship Winner
• Cailey Martínez — Pearse and Deidre Lyons First-Place Graduate Award and Graduate Apprenticeship Winner

Since its inception, the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition has awarded more than $12 million in UK scholarships and prizes.

“Do what makes your heart sing.”

It was more than advice from our founder, Dr. Pearse Lyons — it was a way of life.

For more than two decades, the Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition has helped young artists pursue their passion, step onto the stage and find their voice. In a world where arts funding is becoming more scarce, this program is a reminder that talent deserves opportunity — and dreams deserve support.

From nervous first notes to standing ovations, these students embody courage, discipline and joy. And joy is powerful. It fuels excellence. It sustains purpose. It changes lives.

Our Story

At the heart of Alltech is an entrepreneurial journey.

In the 1970s, our founder, Dr. Pearse Lyons, immigrated to the United States with a dream: to sustain our planet and all things living on it. As an Irish scientist, he saw an opportunity to apply his yeast fermentation expertise to animal nutrition challenges, and his dream became a reality when he founded Alltech in 1980 with just $10,000.

Today, a global team of more than 6,000 people around the world shares this vision of sustaining and nourishing the world’s plants, animals and people.

We deliver on this vision by improving plant, feed and food quality through nutrition and scientific innovation, particularly yeast-based technology. Our team is fully committed to helping plants and animals achieve their full potential while supporting producers in greater efficiency, profitability and sustainability.
