How much do you know about opioids?

Opioids are medications commonly prescribed to treat pain. They include drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and codeine, as well as illegal drugs like he**in. Opioid pain relievers are generally safe when taken by a short time as prescribed by a doctor, but they can negatively affect the rewards center in the brain and over time, a user needs more and more. This makes opioids highly addictive.

You can help prevent opioid misuse by talking with your provider about pain management options, never sharing prescriptions, and safely disposing of unused medications.

👉 Jackson County Health Department offers free, prepaid medication return packages from MedTakeBackIllinois.org. Pick one up at our office — or request online that one be mailed to you.
