Parenting Tips

Choose your battles!
Toddlers are easily distracted and utilizing this to your advantage is an important parental tool. However, it is important to note the difference between bribery and distraction. Bribery is a tool used out of frustration and exhaustion and derails the authority necessary for success. Distraction is utilized to secure the focus of the child in a more favorable direction to allow the parent to accomplish such feats as getting out the door and to daycare on time. Use of a small toy, book, or task, "big kids carry their back packs" will encourage participation and appropriate interaction while avoiding emotional or physical meltdowns.
