Food is not a privilege. It’s a basic human right.

Because of the federal government shutdown, 600,000 Hoosiers who rely on SNAP won’t receive benefits on Nov. 1 — including nearly 150,000 in Central Indiana. Families already struggling to afford essentials now face impossible choices about how to put food on the table.

In response, community funders launched the $1 million Central Indiana Food Relief Fund to support Gleaners, Midwest Food Bank of Indiana, and Second Helpings — helping provide food to hundreds of local pantries.

Together, we can make sure our neighbors don’t go hungry.

Before the candy craze begins, keep these safety tips in mind from the Hamilton County Health Department:

🍬 Stick to well-lit areas and use reflective gear or glow sticks.
🚸 Walk—don’t run—and look both ways before crossing the street.
🍬 Check candy for torn, discolored, or opened wrappers — if it looks suspicious, toss it!
🧁 Only eat store-bought treats. Skip homemade goodies from people you don’t know.

If Congress does not reach a deal to end the federal government shutdown, funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could run out as early as Saturday. That means families who rely on SNAP to buy groceries may see their benefits temporarily disrupted.

If you or someone you know is food insecure, please plan ahead and use any available SNAP benefits now for shelf-stable items. Local food resources are also available:
