Grateful for an inspiring Research Day at Eastern Virginia Medical School!

Such a great opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate amazing public health work happening across our community.

We were so proud to have Luwam A., one of our lead Health Educators, present on behalf of our Teen Health 360 team. She shared our summer pilot project:

“Breaking Barriers, Building Knowledge: Delivering Evidence-Based & Trauma-Informed S*xual Health Education to Adolescents in Residential Care.”

This project teamed us up with a local organization to bring an interactive, trauma-informed s*xual health program to youth in residential care. The pilot boosted s*xual health knowledge, increased comfort asking questions, and showed just how important it is to create safe, supportive spaces for young people to talk openly about relationships, consent, and their bodies.

So grateful for our partners, our dedicated educators, and the youth who inspire us every day!

💙 November = American Diabetes Month 💙

Diabetes doesn’t just affect adults - it impacts teens too.
And guess what? Our everyday habits matter more than we think.

😴 Getting real sleep
🚶🏽‍♀️Moving our bodies
💧 Staying hydrated
🍓 Choosing fuel that actually helps us feel good

These aren’t “perfect habits” - they’re protective habits.
Taking care of your body now = protecting your future self. ✨

was last Thursday, but the movement doesn't have to stop there! We're issuing a November Kindness Challenge: let's make kindness the default all month long.

How You Can Participate:
Compliments: Brighten someone's day with a sincere compliment.
Helpfulness: Offer to help a neighbor, a coworker, or a family member with a task.
Donations: Clear out the clutter and donate gently used items to a local charity.
Small Gestures: Pay for the coffee of the person behind you in line.
Self-Care: Don't forget to be kind to yourself!

Let's create a wave of positivity that lasts beyond a single day.

✨ What an amazing week at APHA 2025! ✨

We’re so proud to have represented Teen Health 360 and shared our work on expanding access to comprehensive s*x education across Eastern Virginia at the APHA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Presenting our projects wasn’t just about sharing data- it was about starting powerful conversations, celebrating teamwork, and building connections with public health leaders across the country and beyond!

What we presented:
🎤 Scaling Up Comprehensive S*x Education Through University–Public School Partnerships for Adolescent Health (Oral - led by Eden M.)
📌 Filling Gaps in Comprehensive S*x Education for Adolescents Through Virtual Capacity-Building Trainings in Eastern Virginia (Poster - led by Eden M.)
📌 Talking the Talk: Training Educators to Deliver Evidence-Based Adolescent S*xual Health Interventions in Hampton Roads (Poster - led by Keeley Y.)

It was such a joy connecting with colleagues from the ODU–NSU Joint School of Public Health, exchanging ideas, and celebrating our shared commitment to community well-being. 🌱

🌟 Special shoutout to Eden for her award-winning oral presentation on a PRAMS study examining maternal adversity and postpartum depression, completed during her practicum under Dr. Fu. She received Honorable Mention for Highest Scoring Abstract from the APHA Women's Caucus- congratulations Eden! 🎉

Feeling inspired, grateful, and reenergized to keep advancing work that uplifts the health and resilience of youth, families, and communities. 💚

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

Breast cancer doesn’t just affect adults - learning about it early helps us all protect our health and support those we love.

💡 Why it matters:
Knowing the facts empowers you to take charge of your body and be there for others. Early detection saves lives - and awareness starts with YOU.

✨ Know your body:
Everyone should know what’s normal for them. While full self-checks are usually for adults, teens can still learn to notice changes (like new lumps, swelling, or pain) and talk to a trusted adult or healthcare provider if something feels off.

Together, we can spread knowledge, show compassion, and make a difference. 🌸
